This project took about five months. The first two, I was just trying to figure out how I could convey community in a marching show. Mr. Davenport helped with that decision by telling me that my show doesn't have to be like the shows I marched before. I could write a show that was 80 beats per minute and just one movement. That's the fun of art: making something new. After that realization, I finished my arrangement of Auld Lang Syne, wrote my drill, and was able to finish my project. Without that advice, I never would have been able to complete my capstone.
This is something I truly had never done before. Most music students have tried writing music. Granted I never tried to write something to the extent I did with On We Go, but I had tried to write something before. Drill, on the other hand, is something I never thought I could write. I'm very proud of myself for learning to write my own drill
I chose Monday and Wednesday for rehearsals, because I wanted to work around the Queen Creek Indoor Percussion Schedule. I put a one-hour rehearsal on Monday, because I did not want to cut too far into pit rehearsal for the musical. Wednesdays were when we did most of the drill.
As I said before, I've tried to write my own music, but that was not quite as big as what I did for On We Go. I arranged Faivizio Ferrari's piano and flute duet of Auld Lang Syne for a woodwind quartet with a cello solo. I started by passing the melody between the instruments, then added in the piano part. That took months to complete, but, once I finished, I was proud of what I made.
