Capstone Reflection
Thinking about the process and product of your Capstone, reflect upon what you are most proud of and what you might do differently if you were to complete a similar project in the future.
In regard to my Fine Arts Capstone, I am most proud of how adaptable I was to unforeseen circumstances. From my original planned venue being unavailable (and finding that out a week before the initial show date; to changing the overall blocking and feel of the show to fit the new and smaller space. I am proud of how I was able to handle those situations professionally and produce a show I am more proud of in the end. If I were to complete a similar project in the future I would definitely have a script that has more descriptive factors to fill in the blanks that may otherwise need to be inferred by audiences in order to rid of any confusion regarding the story or characters' motives.
Explain how your life experiences are reflected through your project.
My personal experience was reflected through my project by not only telling a story that I will carry through the rest of my life and relate it as my favorite high school memory, but also explaining the lesson of not judging people's personal stories no matter how great, or small. I am able to do this by taking moments out of the main story to explain each person's personal issues and their own stories which are internal monologues that are screaming at them even when they are alone with their friends
Thinking about the Extracurricular hours you completed, reflect upon what you learned through the experiences and/or how you have been impacted as an artist?
The majority of my extracurricular hours were spent in rehearsal for shows, but more specifically musicals. These have impacted me as an artist by establishing an understanding of the musical theater world of fine arts. From observing my directors to my role in the show I have been able to understand the different forms of artistry that collectively create a piece of art. Within the hours I have also submitted, I also have noted my sessions as an STO (State Thespian Officer). I represented thespians (theater students) in my state from 2021-2022 outside of my district alone. This impacted me by critically coming to a census of how to lead in a world where everyone is strong and driven, and how to lead by example. I believe my time in the STO program made me a much better director.
How is your life positively impacted by the arts?
My life has been positively impacted by the arts as they have been a function that has stuck with me. While my roles or show I am in will change over time, the process of doing theater, choir, or anything affiliated with performing never changes. The theater has been a home for me no matter where I go. Full of welcoming people and no matter if I am starting somewhere new, or going back to a performing arts place I have been to before, everyone always feels like family. When I transferred to QCHS, theater was how I found friends and my place. It was something I always wanted to work hard to be the best at. I know that it will always stick with me after high school as well.
How do you plan to include artistic experiences in your future after high school?
After high school, I intend to attend Southeast Missouri State University to major in musical theater and marketing management, both things I have come to love in my fine arts journey. I believe that I will be able to apply everything I have earned in high school to be successful, but also to grow further in the arts and add more tools to my toolbox.
What advice would you give incoming freshmen about studying the arts to help them make the most of their experiences while in high school?
I would give any incoming freshman who plans to study the arts in high school the advice of participating. If there is an opportunity, seize it. Some of my best memories are from competitions or shows I didn’t even know that I would have fun being a part of. I truly believe I had such a great high school performing arts experience because I always strived to be better than I was before. I started by transferring in and being a pig in Into The Woods. Fine arts are something you have to work hard on to constantly improve. Even if you think you couldn’t get any better, I promise you that you can, and you will have a great high school experience if you strive to do that much.
