4th Grade

Critical Thinking: Coding

FOURTH GRADERS begin by coding the Code & Go Mice through advanced level mazes. They work with partners to write their code, test it, and debug it.

Next, they develop their screen-based coding skills using Tynker.

From there, they advance to coding a simple video game using the Scratch Jr. app on iPads.

For their final project they code a more advanced video game using Scratch on Chromebooks. They also learn basic electrical engineering, designing and building their own video game controllers to use with their Scratch game.

Collaboration: BreakoutEdu

Students practice their collaboration skills working together to solve puzzles and open up the Breakout boxes.

Creativity: Design Challenges

These are fun, hands-on, creative & collaborative activities. Students are issued a challenge and provided with materials. They work in small groups to meet the challenge.

Some challenges are open ended, with few constraints. For others, students must design and build with parameters in mind. For these challenges, there is an emphasis on trial and error. Students continually refine their design to create the best possible final product.

Students are asked to reflect on their process as part of the closing of the lesson.

Communication: Flipgrid

Students use the Flipgrid app to record short videos as part of the closing of an activity. They reflect on their performance and their learning. They are encouraged to use newly acquired academic vocabulary when describing their work.
