The Akkadians were led by a strong king and skilled general. Under the leadership of King Sargon the Akkadians controlled all of Mesopotamia by 2300 B.C. He taught his soldiers to fight in tight formations (similar to a shield wall or phalanx) which allowed for more command and control on the battlefield.
In order to control his empire King Sargon used a variety of very clever strategies. He tore down city walls in order to prevent rebellion, he replaced city leaders with governors that were loyal to King Sargon himself, and he became the first king to declare that his son rule the empire upon his death.
Hammurabi's code of laws were extremely detailed. The laws covered many situations including trade, working contracts, marriage, divorce and punishments for crimes. Based on the word of the gods, the laws applied to everyone (although not equally) and they could never be changed. Hammurabi's code of laws unified the people and preserved order in the empire.
The Assyrians collapsed and conquered the Babylonian empire toward 900 B.C.E with a newly trained ruthless army. The Assyrians were feared for their cruelty, prolific war strategies (siege), and military technology (iron weapons) gave the Assyrian empire a massive advantage over it's enemies. Religion remained very influential in the social and political order of the Assyrian empire. Kings obeyed the gods and even built beautiful palaces to honor them.
Although a military powerhouse the Assyrians understood the tough climate and living conditions that the people of Mesopotamia faced. Maintaining the irrigation systems and building some of the first aqueducts allowed the Assyrians to bring in drinking water from 30 miles away to the people living in their empire.
Summary:
The Akkadian Empire King Sargon created the world's first empire. The Akkadians developed their own language. Artists carved beautiful relief sculptures on stones.
The Babylonian Empire King Hammurabi created a code of laws that applied to everyone in the empire. Babylonian agriculture and trade thrived under his rule.
The Assyrian Empire The Assyrians honored their powerful kings with beautiful palaces and huge sculptures. They built some of the earliest aqueducts.
The Neo-Babylonian Empire King Nebuchadrezzar restored the splendor of King Hammurabi's time. His Hanging Gardens of Babylon became famous.
