Pragmatics/Social Communication Skills

The term social communicaiton skills refers to the way we use both verbal and nonverbal langauge (gestures, proxemics, facial expressions) to communicate with those around us. Students who have difficulty communicating in appropriate ways at school may have weaknesses in their social communication skills.

Students with weaknesses in their social communication skills may need to be taught the importance of taking conversational turns with peers, asking questions and commenting to continue topics of conversation, maintaining non-preferred topics of conversation, social problem solving (knowing what to do or say in a variety of social scenarios), or understanding/seeing the perspective of others (teachers, peers, parents).

Please see the Pragmatic/Social Language Resources tab for helpful websites to learn more about social communication skills and how these may affect your child at school.
