This page has a variety of resources you can use to help your child improve their language skills. Strong foundational language skills are important for helping students succeed in the academic environment. In school, language skills are an important component of story comprehension, following multi-step directions in class, understanding nonliteral language forms (metaphors, similes, idioms, etc.), and the ability to create narratives or stories using appropriate syntax (word order) and sentence structure.
Speech therapy often addresses three main areas of language-- form (word order, sentence structure, ability to use sequential terms to create cohesive narratives); content (ability to use and understand a variety of vocabulary words, oral comprehension skills); use (ability to use language for a variety of functions, such as requesting help, commenting with peers, protesting).
