Las Colinas offers 3 levels of instrumental music as a year-long class.:
Beginning Band – No previous musical experience? No problem! Join the Beginning Band and have fun learning how to play a musical instrument in a group setting. Instruction is available for the following instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone and Baritone. Now is the chance for students in any grade level to build a skill that can be fun for a lifetime! And it’s even possible to borrow some instruments from the School District.
Intermediate Band – Students with at least 1 year of experience on a band or other instrument may join the LCS Intermediate Band. Students will develop their technique and teamwork skills while playing a variety of music and performing at several different events throughout the school year. Percussion, starting with bells (xylophone) is also available. At the beginning of the year, students may also decide to change instruments from what they have played before.
Advanced Band – 7th and 8th grade students with more than 2 years of experience on a band instrument may audition to join the Las Colinas Advanced Band. Students will continue to develop their technique and teamwork skills and play a wide variety of music from rock/pop to classical to jazz. LCS Advanced Band students perform at a variety of events throughout the school year.
6-8th Grades
A whirlwind survey of music with weekly digital music applications projects.
This class includes
- using weekly digital music applications as tools for simple song composition, creating a background for art or cartoons, and audio and video productions
– comparing a variety of music types from 1900 to pop/rock of the 1960’s & ‘70’s
– building a basic understanding of music notation, harmonies & melodies, song structure, and music composition
Much of our class time is spent with projects using digital applications to explore ways to create or compose music. This is primarily a hands-on opportunity to begin to understand how music is put together and how to use it to create desired effects for projects or compositions. This is a 1 semester long class.
Our after-school jazz band is supported by donations to SOKM https://sokm.net/classes/. Please register at the on-line website after you see me for an "audition".
Mondays & Wednesdays, 3:30 - 4:30 pm, Las Colinas Band Room D7, starting Monday October 2nd!
Auditions are after school by appointment in September and January in the Las Colinas Band Room D7.
Audition Requirements
Wind instruments should be able to play music in the "Blue Book" (Standard of Excellence Book 2). This is about the same level as the Las Colinas "Advanced Band" class. We include keyboard, bass, rhythm guitar, and drums/ percussion. Please contact me for a simple "audition" at Las Colinas. Thanks.
For wind instruments:
Standard of Excellence, Book 2 ("Blue Book")
#98 & #100
Page 42-43: "thirds" for concert Bb, Eb, & F major scales; chromatic scale
Audition playing is judged on the priority basis of rhythm, notes, articulation, and musicality. The music should sound confident.
For drum set, keyboard, mallets, bass, and guitar:
Please bring some prepared music to show what you can play. Also sight read excerpts of actual music we perform. Please email me for music posted on Google Classroom. Drum set player needs to be able to read music and play a number of rhythm patterns on set, including swing, blues, latin, rock, and jazz beats. Contact Reese Copsey
Becoming a member of the group requires a commitment to be at all of the performances, be at as many practices as possible, and to continue playing with the group for the entire school year. If you miss 3 consecutive weeks without notice you are assumed to no longer be part of the group. Please email to schedule an audition or if you have questions. Thanks, Reese Copsey
