"The Very First Labor Day."
The very first Labor Day took place on September 5, 1882. This holiday was created by Peter J. McGuire who was a carpenter and labor union leader. It was made as a holiday to celebrate and honor all American citizens. At first, Peter didn't know what day to have this new holiday but then he had the idea of having it halfway between the four months separating Independence Day and Thanksgiving. Due to this, the first Labor Day was decided to be on the first Monday of September. To celebrate this day, Peter held a parade which included a picnic, concert, speeches, and 10,000 American workers marching from City Hall to Union Square. In 1894, Labor Day was passed in congress which made it a national holiday and is still celebrated today!
