In 5th grade at Pymatuning Valley Middle School students have the option of being part of the band! Most students begin in 5th grade and continue their journey through middle school and one day join the high school marching band, jazz band, and concert band. Students have the option of starting on the following instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone and Percussion. In 6th grade they have options to learn more specialty instruments like: Tenor/Bari Sax, Oboe, Bassoon, French Horn, and Tuba. 5th Grade Band is a class and meets during 1st period skills. Students receive instruction 3 days a week; one lesson day and 2 full band days. Students are tested at the beginning of the year to see what instrument they may succeed at.
5th Grade Band performs 2 concerts a year, their first concert is in December and the second is in May. 5th grade band also travels with other middle school students to Waldameer Amusement and Water Park in Erie, PA on our annual end of the school year trip.
In 5th Grade Band we use the lesson book: Habits of a Succesful Beginner Band Musician. There are excellent resources with this book including instructional videos and play along audio tracks to help students in their practicing. Books can be purchased from Mr. Dye or at any of our supported Music Stores like Daybreak Music or Chagrin Valley Music.
Information about instrument rentals and what to look for in an purchasing an instrument can be found on the "Be Part of the Band" tab.
