1. Watch “Endangered Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly” and consider how this butterfly’s lifecycle is dependent on local plants growing in a healthy environment. (2.5 minutes)

2. Naturalist Handbook- Read about the “Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly” in the Naturalist Handbook on page 30. Use what you learned from the reading and video to draw a model of the Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly’s life cycle on Page 31 question #1.
3. Naturalist Handbook- Read the Plant chapter (pages 32-35) Focus on pages 34-35 to be prepared for a Plant Identification Challenge during the clasroom session.
See Additional Resources below if you would like to see an identification sheet with photographs of all of these plants. You can use the photographs to color the pictures in your handbook and add drawings of the plants that don't have illustrations!
4. Be sure to have your completed Habitat Survey (Naturalist Handbook page 37) and Wildlife Survey (Naturalist Handbook page 38) ready for the class discussion.

Plant Identification
Here is an Identification sheet that has pictures of all of the native plants described on pages 34-35 in your Nature Handbook. You can use these pictures to color in your Handbook, draw pictures of the plants that don't have illustrations or to simply get to know the plants better!
