Students in 4th grade need to master their multiplication facts from 0 to 12 as soon as possible. Most of the skills that we teach in 4th grade require multiplication skills. We will practice these math facts together in class!
We use a series called Go Math. Assessments will take place as we move through this series. There is a quiz about half way through each chapter and a test at the end of each chapter. There may be other assessments as we move throughout the school year. Our Go Math series also offers differentiation for students who either need a challenge or extra practice!
We use a Language Arts series called Wit and Wisdom. This is a brand new series for all of us this year which is based upon the Science of Reading research. I am so excited to get started! Fourth grade is the year where students transition from picture books to chapter books, as well as transitioning from learning how to read, to reading for learning.
Additionally, we will use Scholastic News and Achieve 3000. Much of our Reading time is spent on practicing reading skills and strategies learned in whole group lessons. Our Writing will be seamlessly intertwined into our Language Arts block and is also based on the Science of Reading research. It's going to be an exciting year!
For Science, we use the National Geographic text, focusing on life, physical and earth science. Tests will be given as units are completed. Other assessments may include projects, Science labs, vocabulary quizzes, reports, etc. I also love to use Mystery Science in the classroom in addition to our textbook!
Social Studies in 4th grade is based on New Jersey location, facts and state history. We start with reviewing the differences between continents, countries, states, and towns. We then explore our state's geography and move on to New Jersey history. Social Studies quizzes are given and are open book/open note assessments. Other assessments may include projects, classwork, vocabulary quizzes, reports, etc.
