Late Work Policy

Students and Parents will be able to check grades through AERIES!!!
All assignments are due on the assigned date! Newsela articles will not be accepted late! The student will have the opportunity to finish classwork at the end of the day or at home for assignments not finished in class that day. These assignments if turned in by the following day will be given full credit. All other late work will only receive a partial grade, unless the student has an excused absence. Excused absences have 3 days to make up missing work. A missing work notice will be sent home every Monday to students who have a D or below. The notice needs to be returned by Thursday with the missing work completed. The notice serves as a communication tool both to the parent and the teacher. After receiving the notice back, I will then grade the missing assignment.
If the student doesn’t turn in the missing assignment paper by Thursday, they will receive one more opportunity to finish their work during Friday study hall for half credit. After Friday, the work will no longer be accepted. All students that are earning a 69% or below in English will be given the opportunity to work on their skills during Friday study halls.

Most work will be completed and graded online. Students will be learning to peer edit, close read, and think critically about what they have read.
Interactive Notebooks- We will be creating a digital interactive notebook, as well taking notes in a composition book throughout the year. Most work will be accessible through Google Classroom, however the students will use their English composition notebook notes to study for tests and quizzes. The interactive notebook will highlight accomplishments in English.
Step Up to Writing and Six Traits Writing- The students will be focusing on writing informational reports, argumentative essays, and narrative essays. The emphasis this year will be placed on citing evidence to support their claim in writing, whether it is a short answer during reading or writing an argumentative essay.
Newsela –Students will be accessing a website that has leveled articles to help them build comprehension. The website will show their progress and reading levels throughout the year. Students will focus on Close Reading strategies to further their understanding of the text. Students will use Accountable Talk to learn how to politely have an academic discussion.
