Purdue Global Dictionary Helps First-Generation Students With Unfamiliar Terms

Words like “accommodation,” “accredited,” “microcredentials,” and “provost” can prove to be challenging terms for first-generation adult learners. On top of the many other hurdles students face, understanding the words and terms that professors use can be an adjustment.

That is why Maggie Morgan, Academic Department Chair for Purdue Global’s Department of Human Services, led a group of first-generation students in the development of Speaking “University,” an online educational definitions dictionary, which helps students as they begin their educational journey or continue their comeback to finish their degree.

“My department has a greater number of students that have been traditionally underserved. One of the things in the research of first-generation students is often they’re the least likely to ask for help. They may feel intimidated or anxious, and they don’t know all of the language used,” Morgan said. Learn more about this engaging resource.

Purdue Global's Dynamic Partnership with Acadeum

In the ever-evolving landscape of higher education, collaboration is key to innovation and progress. This year, Purdue Global has embarked on an exciting journey by teaming up with Acadeum to continue our effort of creating access to education and supporting learners nationwide. This partnership enables us to offer available course seats to other institutions. The Acadeum network has made seats in our courses available to students from over 400 institutions nationwide. This collaborative effort ensures that students can access the required courses, even if their home institutions don't have available seats. Through consortium agreements, students can enroll in Purdue Global courses and utilize their home institution's financial aid. This approach empowers students to pursue their educational goals seamlessly, irrespective of geographical limitations or financial constraints.

Since we launched the partnership this summer, 11 students from the Acadeum partnership undertook Purdue Global courses in diverse subjects such as Biostatistics, Business, Accounting, Event Planning, Biochemistry, and Microbiology. As of today, 51 students are actively enrolled in our courses, with an additional 21 set to begin their studies on December 6 or later. This growth highlights the value this collaboration brings to both students and institutions.

We're proud to connect with institutions nationwide that need support to help their students continue their education. Furthermore, we are actively developing partnerships with Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), emphasizing our dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education.

One of the institutions within the Acadeum network has successfully enrolled approximately 1,000 students per year through this partnership. Inspired by their success, we aspire to achieve similar outcomes, ensuring our courses remain accessible and impactful to as many students as possible. As we continue to evolve, we look forward to exploring new avenues and partnerships to enhance the educational experience for all.

Purdue Global Village 2023 Success

The Center for Teaching and Learning and the Purdue Global Village Steering Committee would like to thank all who participated in this year’s conference. The event included almost 70 live sessions and 15 asynchronous presentations. Over 600 participants engaged in conference activities during the week.
