Voting Now Open for Purdue Global’s SXSW EDU Entries

Purdue Global staff and leadership have submitted four presentations for a key conference in March that will bring together top educators from around the country.

The SXSW EDU Conference is scheduled for March 4 - 7 in Austin, Texas. In preparation, Purdue Global and various institutions around the country hope their ideas are selected for presentation at the conference.

The submissions are in the Health & Wellness, Leadership for Tomorrow, and Equity & Justice categories. SXSW EDU allows people to vote for their favorite presentations as part of the selection process. Learn more about the submissions and how to vote.

Dr. Abbey Elliot Selected for National Innovation Fellowship 

Dr. Abbey Elliott, Assistant Dean of Immersive Learning & Innovation in the School of Nursing, has been selected for the Ohio State University College of Nursing’s National Innovation Fellowship. As a Fellow of the Center for Healthcare Innovation & Leadership (CHIL), Abbey will join innovators from across the globe with proven success of bringing ideation to fruition. During this esteemed fellowship, Dr. Elliott will explore ways to enhance a culture of innovation organizationally and maximize innovation competence. 

She was also recently appointed by the International Nursing Association for Clinical Learning and Simulation (INACSL) to serve on the Education and Research Committees in July. INACSL is an international organization committed to advancing the science, pedagogy, and learning acquisition of healthcare simulation. “Dr. Elliott’s leadership and expertise as a certified healthcare simulation educator (CHSE) will undoubtedly influence and shape the future of this important work, aligning with INACSL’s core values of discovery, diversity, and collaboration” said Melissa Burdi, Dean and Vice President of the School of Nursing.

As a committee member on the Education and Research Committees, Dr. Elliott will advise on educational programming and will brainstorm innovative ways to meet the needs of the simulation community through educational products and services. In her role, she will also guide simulation experts on how to generate new ideas for research and research funding, providing members with opportunities to receive training and mentorship, and managing INACSL’s research-related programs and awards. Educational Opportunities for Iowa’s Montgomery County Memorial Hospital and Clinics

A partnership with Purdue Global will offer first-rate educational opportunities with tuition incentives to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital + Clinics (Red Oak, Iowa) staff and their family members.

Reminder: Annual Notice on Compliance Training

As a reminder, Purdue Global employees are required to complete an annual set of compliance training. These serve as a “refresher” course about our institutional obligations to our students and one another. The required training includes Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act [FERPA] and Online Security Fundamentals training. You should have already received a notification from APL in your inbox to alert you it is available. (If you were hired in 2023, you are not required to complete this training).

NOTE: Employees who reside in the states of Illinois, Maine, and New York, are also required to complete the Harassment and Discrimination for PG Employees training.

The deadline to complete all assigned training is Friday, August 31, 2023

Michele Riley Receives DLA's Wagner Award

Michele Riley, Associate Dean of the School of Multidisciplinary and Professional Studies (MaPS) received the Distance Learning Administration’s Wagner Award in Innovation in the Distance Learning Administration category at the annual conference held in Jekyll Island on July 23rd. 

“Michele's commitment, dedication, and passion for our students are evident; I'm not surprised she is recognized with such a prestigious award. In the School of Multidisciplinary and Professional Studies, we are lucky to have her and appreciate all she does for our students and to progress the university's mission,” stated Mya Fields, Assistant Dean of MaPS. Certificate of Foundations in College Teaching Opportunity

Purdue Global employees are invited to participate in the Certificate of Foundations in College Teaching program through the Center for Instructional Excellence at Purdue West Lafayette. The certificate provides an overview of evidence-based teaching practices and strategies through an asynchronous online program. The program will run October 16 through November 10, 2023. More information about the program is available on the College Teaching Development Program website. Registration is required and closes at the end of September. 

Pro Bono Work Helps Students Gain Experience, Keep Faculty on Top of Legal Changes

As a lawyer and Concord Law School administrator, Shaun Jamison impresses upon his law students the importance of giving back and being a force for good.

Jamison, of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, serves as Concord’s associate dean of academic affairs and provides pro bono services through Minnesota Legal Advice Online.

Jamison has supervised three Concord students who completed their externships with the online legal service. The students helped people in need of free legal guidance regarding housing, employment, child support, benefits, consumer rights, and debt collections. Jamison also was recently recognized by the Minnesota State Bar Association in the May/June 2023 edition of Bench & Bar Magazine for providing 50 or more hours of pro bono legal services in 2022. Purdue Global Attends CMTE Summer Conference

On July 25th and 26th, Kelvin Gumbs, Executive Director of Educational Partnerships within the Office of Industry Partnerships, and Adam Bufka, Director, Center for Career Advancement for the School of Health Sciences, attended the Council on Military Transition to Education (CMTE) summer conference at Colombia University. 

Kelvin co-leads the engagement committee, while Adam is a member and interim chair for research. Conversations related to best practices surrounding education for transitioning service members occurred with the DOD, DOL, and TAP lead, and several universities spanning the country. The consensus across this committee, and its federal contacts, is that colleges across the nation need to be laser-focused on providing transitioning service members with customized education that will lead to meaningful employment.

* These training sessions will provide an overview of the new instructor permissions in Brightspace that will launch on August 23, 2023. The new permissions provide faculty the ability to create and edit content modules/items and discussion forums/topics. The permissions are a part of the Classroom of the Future Purdue Global Move. The change will empower faculty with new ways to support student success in their Brightspace classrooms. Students will benefit from the added perspective of faculty expertise shared within unique content items and discussion topics in their classes.
