A Nutrition Degree From Purdue Global Kept This Military Mom’s Dream Alive

As the daughter of an officer in the U.S. Air Force, Danielle Finch (BS nutrition, Purdue Global ’23) always wanted to enlist herself, but not until she was done with her bachelor’s degree. That would enable her to begin as a commissioned officer, which offered the workload and pay that would work best for someone with a family to support.

But things didn’t go to plan. She and her husband became parents before she could finish her bachelor’s degree, and she withdrew from classes. After a few years and another baby, career instability and a failing marriage rattled her family, so she attempted to stabilize the situation by enlisting early.

Within a year, though, it was all in ruins. She was divorced, had sole responsibility for two small children, and worked the heavy hours and low pay of an entry-level military job usually occupied by someone 10 years younger. A comeback seemed like a lifetime away.

But it wasn’t. Read more about Danielle's comeback.

Psychology Student Spotlight - Kevin Cornine

Kevin Cornine graduated in May 2021 with his Bachelor's degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology. He chose PG because of the availability of information and described the PG staff as "beyond helpful" and the education as "really accessible."

Kevin's favorite parts of his courses were the energetic professors and seminars, which allowed him to reinforce his learning.

He was promoted to Lieutenant Firefighter/Paramedic with Highlands County Fire Rescue. Kevin is assigned the busiest engine in the county and also oversees the busiest medic unit in the county. He described the concepts learned in industrial organizational psychology as applicable every day. He uses what he learned during debriefing after stressful calls and knows how to adjust his leadership styles to match the environmental contingencies.

Kevin is responsible for fire suppression/life safety tactics and ensuring pre-hospital care is performed to organizational standards. Furthermore, Kevin described that obtaining his degree has also had a positive impact on his family, and supporting his 3 daughters during stressful times.

Criminal Justice Student Spotlight - Jason McDonnell

Jason McDonnell graduated in May 2023 with his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. “Choosing Purdue University Global was easy because the Excel Courses allowed me to attend college and work.”

Mr. McDonnell’s motivation to complete his degree was due to his wife, the agency’s support, and professors. Specifically, Professor Fulk was instrumental in being accessible to students on the Excel Track. In addition to support, his family, friends, and coworkers were gracious in providing their time for interviews. Interviewing criminal justice professionals allowed him to complete assignments and gain additional knowledge.

As a non-traditional student, it was challenging to maintain school and work. While in school, he worked the graveyard shift as a police officer and worked diligently to complete his studies. According to McDonnell, the Excel Track courses were beneficial in allowing him to work and complete his degree.

As a result of completing his degree, he recently received a promotion to Corporal. In the words of Corporal McDonnell, “People in leadership use their knowledge and position to springboard others to success, and I want to help others to be successful.”
