FAQ

What activities does the club do?

The club was designed to teach students different aspects of voyaging, sailing and navigation with no modern instruments

If I join the club, will I be able to sail?

Just like anything, practice makes perfectwork hard, practice working the sail, get the basics down and be a good voyager before our first voyage.

Are you studying only Hawaiian navigation?

For the most part yes, but learning the tools needed to voyage without modern instruments is not just for voyaging around the Hawaiian islands...you can use these methods to reach any destination.

Do you have to be Hawaiian to join?

No.  The club is open to all Academy students who have an interest in Hawaiian voyaging.

Do you have to speak Hawaiian?

No, you do not have to be Native Hawaiian to participate!  Everyone should come with a positive attitude, respect for others, the environment, the wa'a, and a willingness to learn.

What are the various roles that are required on the wa'a?

Navigator, Chef, Steersman, Deck Hand, Educator, Fisherman, Captain, Quartermaster, Medic and others
