Hawaiian Voyaging: Ka Hālāwai Hou

Department: Design Technology and Engineering

This course introduces the basic skills and concepts of Hawaiian Voyaging. Students have opportunities both indoors and outdoors to learn the foundations of wayfinding, cultural protocols, seamanship skills, and the history of Polynesian Voyaging in the Pacific. Throughout the course there are several opportunities to be on the water sailing a double hulled voyaging canoe.

This course can be taken before or after: Hawaiian Voyaging, Nā Kelamoku.


Open to grades 9,10,11,12. Prerequisites: None. Semester course. One-half credit. Satisfies general elective credit. CBL course. Repeatable.

Hawaiian Voyaging: Nā Kelamoku

Department: Design Technology and Engineering

In this course, students engage in hands-on, project based activities that focus on developing their seamanship skills and wayfinding techniques. Multiple off campus trips occur utilizing both Punahou’s paddling canoes and sailing canoe.

Hawaiian Voyaging: Nā Ho'okele Wa'a

Department: Design Technology and Engineering

This course builds upon the lessons learned in both Hawaiian Voyaging, Ka Hālāwai Hou and Hawaiian Voyaging, Nā Kelamoku giving students opportunities to be both crew and leadership on land and at sea on our canoes. Students put their skills into practice by sharing their knowledge with underclassmen and the broader Punahou community. They also engage in deeper learning more about the design, rigging techniques, fabrication and maintenance needed to keep canoes sailing into the future.


Open to grades 10, 11, 12. Prerequisites: successful completion of Lifetime Fitness swim survival test or similar approved by instructor and both Hawaiian Voyaging, Ka Hālāwai Hou, and Hawaiian Voyaging, Kelamoku or significant participation and contribution to the voyaging club as determined by the instructor.
Semester course. One-half credit. Satisfies general elective credit. This course may be repeated for credit. CBL course. Repeatable.
