[In each of the two "My Reflection on..." sections below please share your thoughts on how you fulfilled the criteria for the corresponding Competency. Please do not change the sections "Competency 1: Empathize" and "Competency 2: Create"; the reviewers need those as is to compare your thoughts to the criteria listed.
E. Students can recognize the broad applicability of their knowledge and skill sets, and independently apply their learning in new contexts.
1. I connect knowledge and skills within and across disciplines.
2. I evaluate experiences or solve problems using knowledge and skills from multiple disciplines.
3. I articulate the relevance of my learning.
I have the ability to see connections between seemingly unrelated topics and use those connections to take action and understand the nuances and consequences of issues.
Example: I have been able to show the connections between the affects of climate change and women's reproductive healthcare and relate how one affects these seemingly separate social-justice issues.
A. Students can enact open-minded listening and thinking skills to engage empathetically with people and with different points of view.
1. I demonstrate a willingness to have my mind changed by others.
2. I ask questions to understand the points of view of those I work with.
3. I encourage groups to incorporate a diversity of thought in our work.
Collaboration is often difficult for me because I am organizationally oriented and must collaborate with others in these areas: the DDF student leadership group, DDF Climate Justice group, Blue Planet Climate Crew, and other instances, such as at the Climate Future Forum, Hawaii Children and Youth Summit, and Cooperation Ireland delegation visit.
Example: I am capable of collaboration, despite it not being my preference. I listen, relate, and connect with adults, students, and peers alike when in conversation to create deeper connections that will sustain me in my career and life.
Students can reflect upon how privilege and power have the potential to guide decision making.
1. I recognize power and privilege are not equal for all in a society.
2. I investigate how differing power or privilege impacts members of a society.
3. I explore ways that power or privilege could be used to create opportunities for others.
I recognize how power and privilege affect the world and that all opportunities and experiences are not equal and because of this, I react accordingly to it.
Example: At the Climate Future Forum, I recognized that there was a majority of private school students in attendance and, because of this, only a minority of Hawaii's education system had their voices heard at this event.
