Colfax High School Facility Needs
Colfax High School provides a quality education to over 600 students in grades 9 - 12 in the eastern foothills of Placer County. Last year, Colfax High School had a 100% graduation rate, with many students participating in the school's International Baccalaureate Program.
Aging Colfax High School Needs Upgrades
While student achievement is strong, Colfax High School was built over 60 years ago and is in urgent need of basic repairs and safety upgrades. Other high schools in our region, like Placer High School in Auburn and Del Oro High School in Loomis, have been upgraded thanks to support from their local voters for school facilities improvement bond measures.
Improving Fire Safety and Campus Security
Our region has felt the impacts of wildfires in recent years and Colfax High School is in a high-risk fire zone. Fire safety improvements are needed to allow students, teachers, parents and first responders to get in and out of the school quickly and safely.
Local Funding to Repair and Upgrade Colfax High School Only
To generate locally controlled funding to upgrade Colfax High School, the PUHSD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to place a school facilities improvement bond measure on the November 5, 2024, ballot similar to the bond measure at Placer High School and Del Oro High School that upgraded their aging campuses. Funds from this measure would only be used for repairs and upgrades at Colfax High School, including:
● Replacing deteriorating plumbing systems and maintaining safe drinking water
● Repairing leaky roofs and outdated gas, sewer and electrical systems
● Removing asbestos and lead paint
● Reducing wildfire risk and power shutoff disruptions
● Ensuring all classrooms are clean and safe and equipped with modern furniture and technology
● Upgrading science, math, computer, and engineering labs
Mandatory Fiscal Accountability and Local Control
A local school facilities improvement bond measure would require strict fiscal accountability protections, including:
By law, all funds must be used for Colfax High School only, cannot be used for other schools, and cannot be taken away by the State
A detailed project list and public disclosure of all spending is required
An independent citizens' oversight committee and mandatory annual audits ensure all funds are spent as voters intended
No funds could be used for administrators’ salaries
Helping make Colfax High School eligible for state matching funds that would otherwise go to schools in other communities
