Our language-learning philosophy centers on meaningful communication. Students develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing through authentic, real-world experiences. We value both fluency and accuracy, encouraging students to take risks and use Spanish spontaneously. Our goal is for students to communicate, connect, and engage confidently in Spanish. 

Colfax is a community where language comes to life. Our world language classrooms empower students to communicate authentically, explore diverse cultures, and develop the skills and confidence to engage with an interconnected world. 

All students enrolled in a Spanish course are required to meet the PUHSD Measurement Topics for the appropriate Spanish level. These learning outcomes are measured on the PUHSD Essential Learning Outcomes (ELOs), developed based on the California Common Core state standards, as well by a team of World Language instructors from all campuses in our district. These topics are as follows: Grammar & Vocabulary, Writing, Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Evidence of Learning. 

Our IB Spanish program develops confident, globally minded communicators through meaningful language and cultural exploration. Students engage in thematic units connected to IB prescribed themes, exploring identity, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization, and sharing the planet. Through authentic texts, conversations, projects, and real-world tasks, students strengthen their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while developing intercultural understanding and preparing for success on IB assessments and beyond.
