Graduation Requirement - Elective/CTE Pathway

Course Description: Entry-level instruction focused on Automotive basic maintenance and upkeep.. Introduction to engines and engine rebuilds. Introduction to cooling systems and testing. Introduction to brakes and replacing brake systems. Shop tools, equipment and shop safety. Introduction to becoming a tech in the transportation industry. How the Bar can assist you if you have a discrepancy with a shop Most work is delivered hands on with common assessment at the end of every section.

Course Description: Advanced instruction in all A.S.E. (Automotive Service Excellence) areas including:  introduction to on-board computers and testing; smog control testing procedure advance electrical. Internship opportunities may include: auto dealerships, automotive repair or body shops, retail parts businesses, machine shops, brake and front end shops, motorcycle repair shops, aircraft or specialty shops.

Course Description: The objective of the Colfax High School Leadership class is to train new  leadership students to operate as a team member in the Colfax BusLeadership program.  New members will learn production management processes and skills so they can consistently contribute to the Leadership mission and develop skills to become candidates for project chair positions in the current year and project chair, captain/officer positions in BusLeadership 3. A high percentage of students having had the experience of leadership classes have found that it has prepared them for the many challenges encountered after high school.

Course Description: The objective of the Colfax High School BusLeadership 3 class is to train student project chairs, officers and skills captains to operate the Colfax Leadership program.  Officers, captains, and project chairs will be taught to design, manage, execute and evaluate all leadership sponsored events and programs.  Additionally, officers, captains and project chairs will teach leadership members the same processes so they can consistently contribute to the BusLeadership mission. A high percentage of students having had the experience of leadership classes have found that it has prepared them for the many challenges encountered after high school.

Course Description: Students can apply (with a resume) to be part of the Colfax Technology Team (Customer Service and Technicians). Selected students need to be independent learners, trustworthy, have a strong work ethic, and be 

responsible. This class requires participation in a summer training program where students will be trained to work on the team for the upcoming school year. Students will learn basic programming, networking, hardware and complete technology based term projects. Each block during the year will employ both Technicians and Customer Service personnel who, alongside the System Administrator, will provide technology support to teachers, students and staff. Team members will be trained to perform specified repairs, maintenance and management of Colfax High School IT resources.

Course Description: Have you ever wondered how someone designed that new tool or sleek new phone? Then Introduction to Engineering Design is the course for you. The major focus of the course is learning how to take an idea through a design process that will eventually be manufactured or produced. As you learn about various aspects of engineering and engineering design, such as how engineers communicate through drawing, you will apply what you learn through various wood projects.

Prerequisites:  Intro to Engineering Design with a C or better, strong math skills.



Course Description: How are things made? What processes go into creating products?  Is the process for making a jewelry box the same as it is for a musical instrument?  How has automation changed the face of wood manufacturing?  While students discover the answers to these questions, they’re learning about the tools of manufacturing, manufacturing processes, computer modeling and current manufacturing equipment.  This course is focused on designing projects using CAD and making projects in both a traditional woodshop as well as using CNC manufacturing machines.


CIM is being offered to Colfax High School students as a dual credit class.  The Placer Union High School District has partnered with Sierra College to offer a limited number of dual-credit courses. The courses will be offered during the regular school day by our own credentialed and full-time high school teachers who are also qualified to teach college 

level courses. Students in dual-credit courses will be enrolled in Sierra College and will enjoy the benefits of being a student there, including library privileges. Students will generate a Sierra College transcript and a separate grade from their high school scores.


Engineering Design and Development (EDD)

Course Description: Engineering Design and Development (EDD) is the capstone course in the PLTW high school engineering program. It is an open-ended engineering research course in which students work in teams to design and develop an original solution to a well-defined and justified open-ended problem by applying an engineering design process.

Course Description: Mechatronics is the merger of mechanics, electronics, and computer technologies. This class is a survey of electronic technology presented in the context of science. This class will explore topics ranging from basic circuits to microprocessors, including electronics, music, robotics, electric vehicles, semiconductors, and communications. Students will examine the scientific, historical, political, and economic connections to electronic technology. Through hands-on lab activities, students will be introduced to basic electronics and components, program and interface with a microcontroller, build circuits, engineer structures, and more.

Video Production (Broadcasting 1)

Course Description: This introductory-level course provides an overview of digital video editing, production skills & equipment, as well as an introduction to industry roles within the field of Broadcasting. Students will learn the foundational skills of Camera, Light, Sound, Editing, and Writing for broadcast television. Additionally students will learn the foundational skills for Live Television production and create projects at the introductory level that will mirror what Broadcast 2-3 students are doing for the weekly Ctv show. This course requires outside of class production time.

Prerequisite:  Broadcasting 1 with a C (All foundational skills at 2.5) or better.

Course Description: This intermediate-level course provides a deeper dive into the foundational skills of camera, light, sound, and editing for broadcast television and an emphasis on writing for television. Students will be expected to create content for and help produce the weekly Ctv show.   This course requires attendance at planning/training sessions outside of class and outside of class production time.

Broadcasting 3 

Grade Levels: 11-12

Graduation Requirement – Elective/CTE Pathway

Prerequisite:  Broadcasting 2 C (All foundational skills at 2.5) or better and Teacher Recommendation


Course Description:  This advanced-level course is intended for experienced broadcast students to build, manage and deliver the weekly Ctv show. Students will be responsible for leading production teams to create content (write, shoot, edit stories), create graphics, write anchor scripts and produce a live television show.  Leaders will contribute to production boards that will guide team members in the timely production of the show. This course requires attendance at planning/training sessions outside of class and outside of class production time. All broadcast 3 students should expect to submit work for review by an external competition.


Broadcasting 3-Video Production Dual Credit

Grade Levels: 11-12

Graduation Requirement – Elective/CTE Pathway

Prerequisite:  Broadcasting 2 with a B or better, Teacher Recommendation, Must be a Junior or Senior 

College approved for the CSU/UC Systems


Course Description: Use of digital cameras for producing short form video projects. Introduction to principles, techniques and the terminology of video production and digital filmmaking. Guided classroom exercises and projects, including pre-production planning, video and audio recording techniques, on-location set-ups and studio set-ups, lighting for filmmaking, and basic video editing and output. This course requires attendance at planning/training sessions outside of class and outside of class production time. All broadcast video production students will submit work for review by an external competition.
