Given difficult situations, we are amazed at the resilience of our communities. We would like to share with you a success story rooted in the programming of our Women’s Empowerment Program pre-pandemic.
Our Women’s Empowerment Program is holistic and multi-faceted to ensure that community women come together to learn, share and build support networks. Magalir Mattum, translated from Tamil to English as 'women only spaces' allows for women to build larger support networks within their respective communities and to have the space to discuss community politics and/or issues that may not be spoken about otherwise. Through Magalir Mattum, we were able to identify that financial independence was important for women. Further, that women wished Pudiyador would support them in achieving this independence. This need allowed us to conducting skills training, with the objective of teaching skills (such as sewing) so that these women could be employed in the future.

In our Ramapuram community, we have a dedicated group of women who expressed a need to our team earlier this year - a space for themselves to access reliable sewing equipment. We were very impressed with the initiative taken by these women, and soon enough, we had a space secured for these women to sew and create. These women are still in the initial months of learning, but we have high hopes that this space and the access to sewing machines will eventually help these women to bring an additional source of income to their respective families.
In our Ramapuram community, we have a dedicated group of women who expressed a need to our team earlier this year - a space for themselves to access reliable sewing equipment. Since the pandemic, the majority of our families have been gravely affected and do not have a source of income. However, despite the circumstances, these women reached out to our team the beginning of June and suggested that they could make masks, free of charge, to promote health and safety within their community. After a few phone calls, we were able to locate materials that were safely couriered to Ramapuram and now these women are busily producing masks!
