Focus

We are going to finish our inquiry by taking action at school. We are going to use this week's texts to learn how we could recycle at school.

Instructions

1. Read the two texts below.

2. Create a movie which we could show on PENN to teach the school about recycling.

  • In your group, decide how you are going to present the movie and what job each person in your group is going to have.
  • Share your movie on your blog.

3. Read your library book or the novel for 15 minutes.

WEEK 9: Taking Action

Focus

Can we recycle soft plastics like plastic bags? What happens to soft plastics if we recycle them? Where can we take soft plastics so they can be recycled?

Instructions

1. Read the three texts below and complete the comprehension task.

2. Inquire into this topic in more detail. Write a letter to one of the supermarkets which supply plastic bags. Explain some of your findings and then make suggestions as to how the can better support the environment.

4. Work through Sunshine books and complete the tasks.

5. Read your library book for 15 minutes and write a short review on your blog.

Scan TEXTS 1, 2, and 3 to answer the following questions. You will have 30 minutes to find as many answers as possible.

Week 7 - Respecting our oceans

WALT: recognise the overall purpose of a text and pull out the important information which is useful to us.

WALT: use personal voice as well as show understanding of other view points.

Focus

How is the Volvo Ocean Race in Auckland helping to raise awareness for the health of our oceans? How are the sailors being Kaitiaki of the oceans around the world?

Instructions

1. Read the texts, 'What is ocean plastic pollution?' and 'Ways to reduce ocean plastic pollution'.

2. Search up the North Pacific Garbage Patch. Talk to a friend about what this is and why it is happening.

3. Complete the task.

4. Work through Sunshine books and complete the tasks.

5. Read your library book for 15 minutes and write a short review on your blog.

Week 5 - Respecting our oceans

Focus

We have the picnic and camp coming up. After the heavy rain over the last few weeks, there was a lot of talk about the water quality at beaches in Auckland. Many of Auckland’s beaches were not safe to swim in for a few days, including our beach!

Why did this happen? Is it normal or can we be making a difference to prevent this from happening? Are we showing enough respect for our oceans?

Instructions

1. Read the texts, Giving the Ocean a Voice and Testing the Waterways.

3. Explore the Safeswim website.

4. Complete the task.

5. Read some Sunshine books and complete the tasks.

How can we show respect?

This week, we are going to read some texts about the Treaty of Waitangi and think about why the Treaty was created. Was the purpose of it to create a respectful agreement? Was it all undertaken respectfully?

We will then read a selection of texts which show 'respect' in different ways.


You will also have a chance to choose a text from Sunshine books online to read by yourself.
