I'm sure you've heard this song. Can you learn the words?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_CJFEKNvX8
If you have a piano or ukulele at home, do you think you can learn to play some of the song? It's in the key of C major.
On the piano, start on the E above middle C.
On the ukulele you will need these chords: C, Em, Am, F, G and E7
If you need some help with some of these chords, check out this link. Scroll down a little on the page, and then it starts showing you the shapes for the basic uke chords. https://www.ukulelebuddy.com/free-ukulele-chords.html
Have fun!
When you're watching the video, how many instruments can you identify? Can you see (and hear) the taonga pūoro (Maori musical instruments)? Listen for the kōauau - the nose flute, and the stones tapping the beat.

Do you love singing? How about writing your own song?
The APO (Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra) put together some videos where they worked with a songwriter to write a song.
The videos show you step-by-step how to write a song, and include activity sheets to help you. There are four videos in the series.
If you're keen to write your own song, get something to write notes on (paper or an iPad), and watch the videos below.
https://www.apo.co.nz/community-education/schools/teddy-bear-hunt-videos-and-activity-sheets/
If you do write a song, maybe you can record yourself singing it, and email it through to me - I'd love to hear it!
Happy composing!
Music is all about patterns. When there are regular patterns, our brain enjoys the music more readily.
Ostinato are repeated patterns, and we use them often in the music we make at school.
Try to make your own piece, using the link below. It will make a short loop of 8 beats that keeps repeating. Simply click on one of the diamonds to make a sound. To remove that sound, click on the diamond again.
TIPS:
Don’t make your piece too complicated - usually, simple is better.
Do include different sounds (and shapes) in your piece.
Do include some spaces or silences - ‘rest’ spots.
You’ll see lines of diamonds. If you move vertically up or down a line, you’ll make another note and the two notes will play together. This makes chords. See which notes sound good together - clue: they may not be exactly next to each other.
Repetition is good! Repetition is good!
Enjoy!

Communication is the way to go! Don’t you know?
Communication is the way to go!

To get your message through … these days

Go Go Nana - Playground Song (Songs for Kids)
Well Nana was cool when she went to school
These are the games she played
You may know just a couple of these ‘cause
Some we play today.
iPads, Game Boys didn’t exist, back in Nana’s day
They went outside to pass the time
and this is what they played.
CHORUS:
Hopscotch, with a chalk and stone
Marbles and knucklebones
Elastics, singles and doubles
Bullrush got them in a whole lot of trouble
Children scattered all over the yard
Doing magic tricks and playing swapsy cards
(Spoken) Queenie, Queenie, who’s got the ball?
Ring a ring o’ rosie and down they’d fall
Go go Nana, Nana go go. Back in the olden days
Well Nana was cool when she went to school
And some things haven’t changed
iPads, Game Boys didn’t exist, back in Nana’s day
They went outside to pass the time
And this is what they played.
They played
CHORUS:
Hopscotch, with a chalk and stone
Marbles and knucklebones
Elastics, singles and doubles
Bullrush got them in a whole lot of trouble
Children scattered all over the yard
Doing magic tricks and playing swapsy cards
(Spoken) Queenie, Queenie, who’s got the ball?
Ring a ring o’ rosie and down they’d fall
Oh Nana swingin’ from the monkey bars singin’
“Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?”
Round and round on the jungle gym
Playing tag and now - YOU’RE IN
Hide and seek in the monkey apple trees
Rollin’ down the hills and scraping their knees
Cartwheels, headstands, backward flips
Hula hoops swingin’ round her neck and hips
Woah woah woah wooooh
Go go Nana, Nana go go. Back in the olden days
Well Nana was cool when she went to school
And some things haven’t changed
Yeah Nana was cool when she went to school
And some things haven’t changed
Hide ‘n’ seek, yeah here’s a peek at the
Playground in Nan---a’s day.
Go go Nana. Nana go go!

Beautiful Soldier
Words & music by Marian Burns
VERSE 1:
Beautiful soldier, so handsome and young
Beautiful soldier, you life’s just begun
Why have they called you?
Oh what have they done?
Beautiful soldier, they’ve given you a gun.
And what lies ahead cannot be undone.
VERSE 2:
Beautiful soldier, what did they say
Dutiful soldier, as you went on your way?
They told you they’d wait for you,
they begged you to stay.
They swore their love for you,
and God, how they prayed.
But what lay ahead could not be undone.
No, what lay ahead could not be undone.
VERSE 3:
Frightened soldier, in the trenches you lie
Frozen in the darkness under a
smoke-filled sky
Surrounded by soldiers,
you heard their cries
Oh brave, brave soldier,
you were too young to die.
CHORUS:
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn
No, age shall not weary them
We will remember them.
We will remember them.
ODE:
And they who were young
shall not grow old
Though in the graves they lie,
their story’s told
And as the sun goes down
and rises up again
We will remember them.
We will remember them.
(trumpet)
Beautiful soldier
