It is with great pleasure that I share an exciting new initiative led by the IPOS federation members. On behalf of the International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS), I am pleased to announce the establishment of World Psycho-Oncology Day (WPOD), to be celebrated annually on April 9, beginning in 2025. – Wendy Wing Tak Lam, PhD President, International Psycho-Oncology Society (2023–2025)
This initiative is set to elevate the visibility and impact of psycho-oncology globally, emphasizing that true cancer care goes beyond treating the disease and embraces the whole person.
Every year on April 9th, the global community of psycho-oncology professionals comes together to honor the psychological, emotional, and social dimensions of cancer care. Traditional approaches often focus exclusively on medical treatment, but true healing involves addressing the mind and soul as well. Cancer affects not just the body, but also a person's emotions, relationships, and quality of life.Â
"Behind every cancer diagnosis is a person with fears, hopes, and dreams—psycho-oncology honors all of these."
A diagnosis marks the beginning of an emotional journey for both patients and their families. The reality of facing cancer brings about shock, anxiety, and grief, alongside hope and resilience. Psycho-oncology fills in the gaps by offering essential mental and emotional support, making sure that every individual is seen, heard, and cared for throughout their battle.
While medical interventions are imperative for physical healing, the emotional and psychological support provided through psycho-oncology is equally vital. Comprehensive cancer care integrates treatments with interventions that ensure patients experience:
Counseling & Therapy: A safe space to process trauma, fears, and anxiety.
Support Groups: Connection with peers to alleviate isolation.
Palliative & End-of-Life Care: Ensuring comfort and dignity during challenging times.
Survivorship Programs: Guidance and support post-treatment.
By addressing the mental and emotional challenges, psycho-oncology contributes to improved treatment outcomes and better quality of life.
As a psycho-oncology student, I have come to appreciate that healing involves more than just battling cancer. My studies have shown me that compassionate care—one that addresses fear, uncertainty, and emotional pain—can empower patients to navigate their journeys with dignity and resilience. Breaking the stigma around emotional vulnerability remains a critical mission, as every cancer patient deserves a holistic approach that values their whole self.Â
World Psycho-Oncology Day is a call to reimagine cancer care by integrating psychological support with medical treatment. On this day and every day, let us commit to:
Breaking the silence around emotional struggles in cancer care.
Advocating for comprehensive, patient-centered approaches.
Embracing initiatives like WPOD that champion psycho-oncology worldwide.
Every cancer patient deserves care that goes beyond curing the disease. By standing together and promoting holistic, compassionate care, we can transform the landscape of cancer treatment and support individuals in every aspect of their journey.
