"Empowering PSHS Educators: Aligning Pedagogy and Assessment for Meaningful Learning Outcomes"
Sheryl Lyn C. Monterola is the Director of the National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) and a Professor of Science Education at the University of the Philippines - Diliman, College of Education. In 2022, she was awarded the Gawad Tsanselor para sa Natatanging Guro by the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Her work focuses on the development of 21 st century skills, futures literacy, and STEM skills for basic education, tertiary level, TVET, and workforce applications. A few of the programs that she has developed or is currently involved with include the following: STEM Education Master course for Teachers; 3D Printing Curriculum for high school; integration of STEM in TVET; Development of Competency Framework and Modules on Advanced Manufacturing; Data Science for Education; and AI in education. She collaborates with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education (MIT RAISE), Unilab Foundation, and the Center for Integrated STEM Education (CISTEM) for the Day of AI Philippines and the implementation of the AI Literacy Curriculum in the Philippines. Dr. Monterola is a member of the Special Studies Technical Working Group (TWG) on “Enhancing the science, technology, and mathematics components of the K-12 curriculum including research in the teaching and learning of science, technology, and mathematics” of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). She is also the chair of the DOST Advanced Manufacturing Center, Additive Manufacturing Technical Working Group for the Education Sector. As a teacher educator, she is a member of the Technical Panel for Secondary Teacher Education of the Commission on Higher Education. In 2016, Prof. Dr. Monterola was a visiting scholar at the National Institute of Education (NIE) at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. She holds a doctorate degree in Physics Education from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
