Average Likert scores by Grade 5 mentees
Mentorship sessions are scheduled to last for two hours; however, they usually go longer by several minutes to go a bit more in-depth with some of the topics presented. It can be noted that Questions 4 and 6 deal with the aspects that are most affected by the time constraints of the program, which would be understanding the information presented by the mentors.
The scores across all sessions for Question 3, which deals with the expectations of the students in the program, for the Grade 5 students are also quite low relative to the Grade 6 students. This may be due to the Grade 5 students not being familiar with the science high school application process yet, which could possibly lead to other expectations.
"It was very fun and very engaging, although there were some slight mishaps it's good overall, and it helped me write essays"
"I feel happy that we experienced the program. It helped me feel more confident to enter a science high school"
"My thoughts on this program are: this is very helpful for kids who will apply soon in science high schools. it helps me prepare for the entrance tests."
Score analysis of Grade 5 and 6 mentees in the Pre-Test and Post-Test
The mean, median, lowest, and highest scores for both Grade 5 and 6 students are higher in the Post-Test than the Pre-Test, which shows that the session was actually quite helpful.
However, it can be noted that some of the topics covered by the tests are topics that the students don't know just yet. As such, it is possible that more mentees can score higher than 85% provided the topics were taught more in-depth.
Rating of the Mentorship Program by the Supervisor
The mentorship program has been highly rated for its effectiveness in helping the community and achieving the set goals. However, there was one main note given to us after the program. It was suggested that for future programs, mentors could focus more on developing the mentee's Science, Math, and English skills. This was not possible at the time of implementation as the RACE's format required for essay writing.
