Science Special is back again this year with a NEW name - STEM+ Special.
The new name will better represent all the hands-on STEM learning that was part of Science Special last year. Students in every K-5 class will join me in STEM+ Special two times each month throughout the year where there will be all sorts of Science and Engineering learning going on!
During STEM+, I will be teaching targeted grade level appropriate lessons connected to our NGSS Science and Engineering Standards and touch on Math Standards that connect to the science standards. The lessons will be filled with opportunities for hands-on science, engineering, and math activities.
Science Special will happen in two rotation cycles on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays throughout the school year:
Rotation 1: 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade
Rotation 2: Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade
A monthly schedule will be shared with classroom teachers and they will let their students know which weeks they will participate.
STEM+ began the first week of September. Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade began by participating during the weeks of September 4 and 11. Then Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade participated during the weeks of September 18 and 25. A similar schedule will continue throughout the year with each grade level attending an equal number of Science Special sessions.
Every so often, I might ask for help from students and their families for certain simple supplies or materials that can easily be gathered from home - items that will enhance the planned activities and lessons. I will communicate those needs to you as the year progresses and will appreciate any help you can provide.
Because I plan on making the lessons as hands-on as possible, I also anticipate needing a variety supplies and materials that would have to be purchased. Since our budget for these types of supplies is limited, I’ve created an Amazon Wishlist that will change and grow throughout the year– if you would like to help provide supplies for science lessons and activities, I would be immensely appreciative.
