Friendly Letters
1.) Write a friendly letter to a future 5th Grader.

Writing a PSA (Public Service Announcement)
Write a script for a PSA about what someone should do to stay safe during a natural disaster.
Be sure to describe the natural disaster and offer some things the audience can do to keep themselves safe. Choose the most important facts and details from your research about your natural disaster. Then write a script that has a clear introduction, facts and details to describe what to do if the disaster occurs and explain how these actions can help to keep someone safe, and a conclusion.
Include:
Sounds professional so people take it seriously
Describe the natural disaster and its impact
Explains why it is important to know what to do when a natural disaster occurs
Suggest possible actions that would keep people safe during a natural disaster
Engaging for your audience remembers the information
Opinion Writing!
Students learned about how to write a convincing opinion piece based on this imaginary prompt: Why should an abandoned pool be turned into a skatepark?
We practiced writing an engaging introduction with a clear claim and supporting evidence. Students also wrote two main body paragraphs with one piece of evidence with strong reasoning. Finally, students wrote a strong conclusion that gives the reader something to think about after they are done reading their opinion.

We will focus on using imagery, figurative language, and creativity to create various types of poems. We will focus mainly on Spoken Word poems and Two-Voice Poems.
Character Reaction Paragraphs
Students should be able to write a paragraph about how a character reacted to an event in the novel, "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Munoz Ryan.
The paragraph should include:
A topic sentence that explains the event and answers the prompt.
A quote from the text (evidence) supporting by reasoning.
A strong concluding sentence

Effective Summary Writing
Students have been practicing writing a summary of a text or of an article of the UDHR (Universal Declaration of Human Rights). The criteria is listed below. The students also have this in their 3-subject notebook to use as a reference.
