In this module, students will:
read to build knowledge about the rainforest and analyze author’s craft in narrative writing.
learn about biodiversity in the rainforest and rainforest deforestation to understand why scientists study the rainforest.
read various informational texts such as The Most Beautiful Roof in the World by Kathryn Lasky to identify text structure and practice writing summaries.
identify ways they can help the rainforest and the challenges associated with being an ethical consumer.
Module 1- Stories of Human Rights
Big Ideas & Guiding Questions
What are human rights, and how can they be threatened?
How can we use writing to raise awareness of human rights?
In this module, students will build their close reading skills by reading the novel Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. They will learn about human rights and apply this learning to analyze the characters and themes in the novel. They will also closely read selected articles from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) related to events in Esperanza Rising where human rights are threatened.
