Dear Fifth Grade Families,
We cannot believe how close we are to the end of the school year! We are proud to announce that we have officially finished our end of year testing: CMAS and MAPS!!! Now we can focus on getting back to the fun of learning even more as we wrap up our awesome year. We have a very busy next ahead of us so please read all of the information carefully. Also, our upcoming events (there are lots of them) have been updated below, so please don’t forget to write those in your calendar :)
5th Grade CONTENT AREAS:
ALL Block:
Math: we will begin previewing some upcoming 6th grade math skills that build on the 5th grade skills we have learned this year. The start of middle-school-math should feel less bewildering for them in August.
Module Block: we are nearing the end of our final Module: The Impact of Natural Disasters. We ask that you check-in with your student about what natural disaster they have researched! They are busy working on their final assignment for this module which is to create a PSA (Public Service Announcement) for a disaster with key information on what people should do to prepare. Some students are even sharing what items belong in an emergency kit for those areas affected by such a disaster.
Human Growth and Development (HGD): Unit will officially end today, therefore all HGD journals are due tomorrow. They are considered complete once all assignments are initialed. (For those that want it, here is the PSD Health webpage in Curriculum that has links to the lessons we used. To see lessons by grade level, visit the Human Growth Development and Sexuality Units web page; the 5th grade lessons are at the top of the three sections.) Please use this information to help guide you should you need to make up any lessons at home due to any absences or early dismissals.
Field Trip: Middle School Visits
Next week we will be visiting Boltz & Lesher middle schools on the morning of Fri, 5/10. We should return to Shepardson around 11:30a. If your child is attending another middle school, please remember to contact them for their details regarding that morning’s plans as this is a district-wide middle school visit event that date. Each family will be responsible for transporting their student to and from their visit as we are only providing buses to Boltz & Lesher. We will all meet back at Shepardson around 11:30 to finish the day together as usual.
Thank you!
The Fifth Grade team

April 17th, 2025
Dear Fifth Grade Families,
Happy long weekend! We are nearing the end of CMAS testing with only two more sessions to go next week on Monday & Tuesday. We are thrilled to be almost done and plan to celebrate once everyone is finished!
CONTENT AREAS: Due to CMAS testing, we have only been able to focus on finishing unit 1 in our Natural Disaster Module in Literacy Block. Students are writing, recording and presenting a PSA (Public Service Announcement) on their researched natural disaster on how to stay safe before, during & after an emergency event. We will be resuming our social studies units on early American history prior to 1776 over the next weeks as CMAS testing concludes, followed by the founding of our country as we approach the end of the school year.
HGD: We are continuing with these lessons each Tues-Thurs from 2:45-3:35 through the beginning of May. Reminder: you should be seeing your fifth grader’s homework journal each day we have a corresponding lesson. Some lessons are split over two days; however, we encourage you to have these important conversations each night. The homework journal has a brief overview of what we learned and some discussion questions/topics to go over with your student and a spot for you to mark that you had a conversation.
Yearbooks: This is the last call to order! The Shepardson Stem Yearbook is a 48 page color book filled with pictures of your classmates, teachers, the Shepardson Staff and lots of memories. The price is only $19.00 per yearbook. All orders must be prepaid. If you'd like to order by check, please fill out the form that went home in Friday folders before Spring Break and return it with payment to your child's homeroom teacher by Monday, April 21, 2025. (Please note this timeline was moved up!)
WANT TO ORDER ON ONLINE?
Simply go to www.yearbookmarket.com and enter Shepardson Elementary in the search box which takes you to your school’s book for purchase or scroll down to Shepardson. A $1.00 convenience fee will be added. Deadline to order online is Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
At the end of May your yearbook will be delivered to your child's classroom. They will have an opportunity on the last day (half day) to get signatures and well-wishes from peers and teachers. Your support for this year's yearbook will allow us to continue the project in the future.
Please be sure to check out the important dates below for some exciting events coming our way! With the end of year approaching, there will be a lot of special dates and events planned, especially for fifth grade!

March 28th, 2025
Dear Fifth Grade Families,
Happy Friday! We hope you had a fun and relaxing spring break! The sun is shining more and more so make sure your students have sunscreen and appropriate clothing. Additionally, as we get closer to the end of the school year (hard to believe) in fifth grade, we typically see an increase in undesired behaviors so we’ve reminded all students that Shepardson school rules do apply until the last day of school. We really appreciate your support in also reminding them of this, as well, so they can all have a strong finish, together! We will be sending home a “Progress Report” each Friday to let you know how the week has gone for your student. It is not to be a punishment or a consequence. It is meant to be a conversation between you and your student about the week.
As we look ahead to April, Human Growth & Development (HGD) will begin on Tues, 4/8 in the afternoon and CMAS testing will begin the next day on Wed., 4/9 in the morning. Please try to avoid scheduling appointments during these times as they require extra time and effort to make up.
Also, don’t forget to order a class picture and/or a yearbook for your child. That being said, please know that yearbooks are a big deal in fifth grade because it is the last one for them as an elementary student at Shepardson and they enjoy getting them signed by each other and teachers/staff during our last days together.
5th Grade CONTENT AREAS:
Mathematics: We did a quick survey of the units of measure. In the metric system, that included meters/cm/km, liters/ml, and grams/kg/mg. For customary units, we highlighted the main ones, such as inches/feet/mile, cup/pint/quart/gallon, and pounds/oz. Fortunately, CDE provides 5th Graders with a conversion chart for reference on the CMAS Math test to remind them of how many of each goes into the other. The main thing is: “is that a small, medium, or large unit of measure?” Phew!
Reading: We have begun our last literacy module: Module 4- The Impact of Natural Disasters. We are continuing to focus on reading informational texts and students have now divided into “expert” groups on one of the following disasters: hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes and tsunamis. So far, they are really enjoying becoming an “expert” by researching their natural disaster.
Writing: We have started a new schedule for writing where students are keeping track of and reflecting on their independent work. Next week, we will be doing a little more poetry because it is Poetry Month! Then, we will be working on how to write a PSA (Public Service Announcement) based on the natural disaster students are studying in Module Block.
Our Human Growth and Development Unit will be coming up starting on Tuesday, April 8th through Thursday, April 10th next week. Here is the PSD Health webpage in Curriculum that has links to the lessons we use. HGD will continue the next few weeks with nine total lessons. To see lessons by grade level, visit the Human Growth Development and Sexuality Units web page; the 5th grade lessons are at the top of the three sections.

Dear Fifth Grade Families,
Happy Friday! First, we’d like to thank you all for your incredible support of your student with the science fair. We appreciate all you did to help your child be successful! Mrs. Woodcox keeps saying that this was the best one yet and that the Fifth Grade projects were outstanding!
We have another busy week ahead with the Scholastic Book Fair and Academic Conferences, next week. If you have not yet scheduled your 20-minute conference, please do so here: conference link.
Additionally, please use this link to submit your 5210+ Challenge Submission form link: https://redcap.link/noco5210challenge
Important reminders about 5210+:
• The submission form closes on Wednesday, March 5th at 9:00pm. After that, it will be closed for good, as T-shirt orders start going out to our vendor first thing the next morning.
• K-5 students and staff who submit their logs online and earned 80 or more checks are eligible for a free T-shirt! Expect your T-shirt to arrive by the first week of May.
• We want EVERYONE to submit their log, even if they didn't earn a T-shirt. Logs with 10+ checks help boost your school’s overall participation.
5th Grade CONTENT AREAS:
ALL Block- working on opinion writing about which factor led to Jackie Robinson’s success in leading social change. We have learned how to “cite evidence from the texts” to support our opinions with facts from J.R.’s life experiences as well as how to write a convincing opinion essay.
Math- In mathematics, we are in our final chapter of fractions. We started a new topic on dividing fractions (dividing is often used in sharing). We will be moving quickly so that we can also review several other concepts prior to state testing in April.
Module Block- We have continued to work extensively on reading informational texts with our focus being how to determine and summarize an author’s point of view by identifying the main points that are being made in various forms of media: essay, video and audio clips.
Our Human Growth and Development Unit will be coming up starting the second week of April. Here is the PSD Health webpage in Curriculum that has links to the lessons we use. January 27, 2025
Dear Fifth Grade Families,
Happy Monday of a new week! We are in full swing with the second semester and have been very productive here in fifth grade. There will be LOTS going on between now and spring break, so please note the events calendar at the bottom of this note!
Math:
We are working on adding and subtracting fractions (the hard part is regrouping part to whole and whole to parts). This topic is an extension of what they learned in 4th grade:
students learned that in order to add fractions, they must have the same denominator (or same-sized parts in the whole).
Then, they can add or subtract the numerators.
Finally, they should be practicing how to simplify the fractions to its simplest form. This may include simplifying an improper fraction (i.e. 9 5/4 → 9 + 1 ¼ -> 10 ¼ )
Our Topic 7 Assessment should be by the end of this week. It will include improper fractions and mixed numbers as well!
Reading:
We are continuing our work in Module 3: Athletes for Social Change. While we continue to work on identifying main idea & supporting details in an informational text (Promises to Keep, by Sharon Robinson) to help write summaries, we are also now:
discussing/identifying factors that helped Jackie Robinson be successful in his mission to end the color barrier in baseball
Please keep in mind that you can access an electronic copy of our text here on my learning page.
Writing:
Practicing editing and revising writing
Verb Tenses
Vocabulary strategies to use while reading
Opinion writing using evidence and reasoning
Science Fair:
By now, your student has completed typing their procedures and list of materials. Now they are ready to do the actual experiment following the steps of their procedure. Use the materials list to get materials to do the experiment. You can also access more information at this website: bit.ly/shepscifair.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Have a fabulous week,

Dear Shepardson Families,
Thank you for your time and support during Academic Conferences! We truly value your input and partnership on behalf of your fifth grader. We have a lot of fun things planned for the month of November so please read carefully to stay informed!
School of Choice: will be opening up soon! Make sure you check out which school is your neighborhood Middle School: https://www.psdschools.org/school-resources/school-locator . Many Middle Schools have opportunities for 5th graders to shadow middle school students to experience the school in an authentic way and can help you decide on where to go. Here are some important dates and links to use:
Mon., Nov. 4, 2024 – School of Choice online enrollment for K-12 students begins!
Mon., Nov. 4 - Dec. 16, 2024 – First-round school choice application period. Bookmark this page, where the school choice application will become available on Nov. 4.
Thurs., Nov. 7 - Lesher Open House 6-7:30p
Wed., Nov. 13 - Boltz Open House 5:30-7:30p
Field Trips: we also want you to be aware that TWO field trip permission forms are coming home today. While not ideal, we are going on back to back field trips on Mon, 11/4 and Tues, 11/5 because of an exciting opportunity extended to us that supports our upcoming PBL. We will be going to the Lincoln Center on Mon, 11/4 to watch a National Geographic Live! film called Wild Wolves of Yellowstone, followed by our field trip the next day, Tues, 11/5 to Boltz Middle School for their electives showcase. Please be sure to sign BOTH forms so your child can attend BOTH field trips each day. We are asking that these forms be returned to us no later than next Fri, 11/1.
Mathing:) This week we have been reviewing multi-digit multiplication and now adding decimals to the process. Students are estimating to better understand how multiplying numbers less than 1 can change the expected answers. We demonstrated our understanding of the concept on posters to show previous learning.
Reading: This week we have been discussing metaphors in our reading of Esperanza Rising. This work has included identifying them and understanding their meaning so we can begin the work of identifying themes that are present in this story. Be sure to ask them where in the story arc we currently are (Rising Action) and why. I’d love for them to be able to explain this to you. We also continue to work on written responses to reading by answering comprehension questions for practice.
Writing: This week we have been writing paragraphs about how characters in Esperanza Rising react to various events. Students have done an amazing job including topic sentences, evidence from the text with reasoning and a strong concluding sentence. We also took some time to write poems about falling leaves to practice metaphors, synonyms and antonyms.
PBL: Next week we will kick off our Fall Problem Based Learning unit on Wolves. With Colorado reintroducing gray wolves to Colorado in 2023, this topic is becoming more prominent locally as the wolf population is starting to gain a foothold. We are addressing the question, “How can we smooth the changes to our state as the wolf population grows in our state? How can we minimize the impact on all stakeholders?” Part of this unit will include expert-visits in addition to the field trip to the Lincoln Center. Stay tuned!
Have a wonderful weekend :)
Fifth Grade Team

Dear Shepardson Families,
OCTOBER arrives next week and the calendar is packed already! Please check your student’s planner for details! Class rotations have settled into routine Monday through Thursday, with Homeroom work time and review on Fridays. We are proud of how kids have risen to the challenge of rotating classes. As they work out the details, we see their confidence in themselves growing. They’ve got this!
In Module Block, we continue reading the novel, Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. Students should have read up to Chapter 4 “Las Guayabas”. If you want to learn more, please check out Mrs. King’s learning page under “Literacy”.
In ALL Block, students independently summarized texts utilizing both our story, Esperanza Rising, articles about the natives for our indigenous region, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Students build summaries into a complete answer using a claim supported by evidence and reasoning. Please look at Miss Bergeron’s learning page under “Literacy” for some videos. They are also writing amazing stories about the “new” constellation they found in the night skies up at Eco Week. Here is a link to Mrs. Bergeron’s Language Arts Learning Page.
In Math Block, we are adding and subtracting decimals to the hundredths place. Since our monetary system is based on this skill, we are working hard to master it! They also have been rounding these numbers to specific place values. For more information, please check out Mr. Foster’s learning page under “Math”.
In Science/Social Studies, we are exploring the movement of the constellations throughout the year. They loved seeing the night skies in the mountains at Eco Week! Students practiced observing details and recording sketchnotes to aid understanding. In social studies, we are exploring how scientists explain how the first people came to the Americas in ancient times. Students are doing a deep-dive on the indigenous peoples of one particular region of North America, which they will present with their team to the rest of the class in coming weeks.
In other news, we have PICTURE DAY next Monday, September 30th! The flier went home this week. Practice those smiles this weekend!
Have a wonderful weekend :)
Fifth Grade Team
Upcoming Events:
Monday, September 30th - Picture Day!
Tuesday, October 1st - Read-A-Thon Begins!
Monday, October 7th - No School (Teacher Work Day)
Monday-Wednesday, October 14-16th - AFTER SCHOOL: parent-teacher conferences
Thursday & Friday, October 17th & 18th - Fall Break :)
PS: Missing something from Eco Week? Please check our lost and found. We brought down FOUR trashbags full of items. If you brought home something that you discovered isn’t yours, please bring it back so that we can identify the owner! For example, is this sleeping bag and inflatable pillow YOURS? The owner of an ORANGE sleeping bag in a black case would like their sleeping bag back! Thanks for your help!
If you were unable to attend our Back To School/Eco Information Night, here is the slideshow we showed. If you have any questions, please email :)

Dear Shepardson Families,
We have had an exciting first 7 days back at school! Thank you for helping your student get and bring in supplies as well as set them up for a successful 5th grade year :) A few kids are missing key items; please remember to send in a blue music folder and student planner for your kiddo by Monday if you haven’t already done so. In addition, please be sure to send two snacks with your child each day as we have two opportunities for snack time throughout our day- a morning and afternoon snack. We are finding that kiddos are really hungry in these early days back to school and are needing their snacks. Thank you for providing them!
We will begin class rotations on Monday! This means, your child will be rotating into other classrooms for: ALL Block- Writing (Bergeron), Math (Foster) and Module Block- Reading (King). If you have specific questions about these subjects, please contact us at:
Angela Bergeron- ALL Block: abergeron@psdschools.org
Mike Foster- Math: mfoster@psdschools.org
Leila King- Module Block: lking@psdschools.org
Our Parent Info Night will be NEXT TUESDAY Evening, August 27th! You can choose from two sessions: the first is 5:30 to 6:00pm and the second is 6:15 to 6:45pm.The first part will be a brief overview of our return to a rotational format followed by highlights for Eco Week and handing out packets with the forms due Friday, September 6th! If you are unable to make it, please look at your student’s Friday Folder next week and email your student’s teacher with any questions.
We have gone over our school Respect Code (Respect for self, others, and the world) as well as what that means in different parts of the school like the playground, walkway, lunchroom, as well as classroom.
We have started getting to know each other to find what we have in common, and what we do not have in common because we are all unique and it should be celebrated.
Friday Folders this week include: information about having a Growth Mindset, ordering Shepardson gear, and Star Squad.. If you have not yet filled out the Parent Home Survey or Technology Contract, please do so for turning in on Monday!
Have a wonderful weekend :)

Dear 5B Parents and Students,
I hope you had a wonderful summer. I am so excited to get to know you!
A couple of things to think about before Supply Drop-off: (Wednesday, August 14th from 3pm to 4pm)
*Does your student have a preferred name they would like to use here at school?
*Do you know their t-shirt size for T-shirts? The order for Fifth Grade shirts is being placed THIS Thursday, August 15th! Please be prepared to note their t-shirt size preference at Supply Drop-off or email ASAP!
*Are there any special accommodations that they need in the classroom? (seated toward the front, a quiet fidget, medical concerns, etc)
I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday! If you are unable to make it, please email me and I will send you the information given at Supply Drop-off.
Have a wonderful day 🙂
