Mentor Overview: New Educator Support
PSD is proud to offer the support of a well-established Mentoring and Induction Program. Building principals or supervisors assign a mentor to new educators who are in the induction program or a veteran educator/ colleague from their building or area.
What is my role as a mentor?
Provide support and resources to navigate their new job and new school(s);
Check in with your mentee regularly as decided in your partnership;
Plan for and follow through with time to talk in person, on the phone, or via classroom visits;
Discuss and model unit and daily planning pertinent to the mentee’s content/pedagogy and skill development;
Explore management strategies and planning, including re-visiting and re-norming for student behavior and achievement.
Explore and utilize standards-based criteria and learning targets;
Reduce the stress of their transition to a new career to promote wellness and balance;
Help them develop their professional performance
Include and support new educators in the school culture, as well as site expectations, systems, and traditions;
Guide and check in with your mentee in completing the requirements of the PSD Induction Program.
Mentor Commitment Form
Your mentee will receive the Partnership Action Plan Form in TalentEd Records. Please meet with your mentee to collaboratively create the Partnership Action Plan before filling out this Mentor/Guide Commitment Form. This Mentor/Guide Commitment form documents your role in the Partnership Action Plan creation.
How often should I meet with my mentee?
In the first year of induction, partnerships with mentors commit to at least 28 hours of meeting and communicating with their mentor. In the second year, partnerships commit to meeting for 14 hours. The goal is to build an authentic partnership where the mentee and their mentor value time together.
Mentor/Guide Stipends
A MENTOR is paid $1,000.00 per year.
A GUIDE is paid $500.00 per year.
All mentors and guides must submit a stipend request form to receive payment. This short form gathers data about the partnership’s progress over the year. Instructions for completing the form will be sent to the mentor’s/guide’s PSD email account in April. Payment will appear on the May Leave and Earnings Statement for stipend requests received by the due date. NOTE: The Partnership Action Plan MUST BE ON FILE with the Mentoring and Induction Program for the mentor’s/guide’s payment to be processed. If the stipend request form arrives after the deadline, the stipend will be delayed.
