Your child will be participating in the Accelerated Reader Program this year. This is a wonderful resource to promote reading and encourage children to use proper reading strategies and develop as a successful reader at his own individual rate of learning. Soon after school begins, your child will take the S.T.A.R. test to determine his/her reading level. Each quarter following your child will take another test. This information will be sent home in your child's assignment notebook so that you can aid in helping your child choose books on his/her reading level and encourage him/her to keep reading appropriate books.
Once your child has found a comfortable reading level they will begin reading AR books for points. Each book is worth a different amount of points, books point value ranges from ½ point to 45 points. Students receive points based on their average after taking a test (Ex: If a student reads a book worth 1 point and earns a 90% then they will only receive 0.9 points for that book).
Each quarter your child will set a reasonable AR goal that will then be a part of their reading grade. If your child has made 100% of their points and an average of 80% or higher on accuracy by the end of the quarter, they will earn rewards at our quarterly AR celebration. It is important to encourage your student to reach their AR goal at home. READING FOR 30 MINUTES IS CONSIDERED HOMEWORK EACH NIGHT. Striving to meet goals is important for their motivation to read in the future. Reading is also fundamental to your child’s success educationally.
