FAQs:
What is Kinard Science O (KSO)?
Science Olympiad is a nationwide stem competition program spread out across all major disciplines of science and technology. Students get the chance to participate in a maximum of 5 out of 23 events. These events vary between study, build, lab, and hybrid (study + lab). Students spend 6 months learning and building, after which they compete with other teams in a friendly and engaging competition. Students can earn medals in their own events, while also contributing to the larger 15 student team to move on to the next level of competition. Science Olympiad is fun, engaging, and creates long-lasting bonds as students explore the world of science and beyond!

The time commitment for this club is quite flexible. Students usually have 1-2 early morning or after school practices, with a two hour long practice for builds and some other events on Thursdays from 6-8. Students will be placed into events based on their interest and schedule availability. Event practices will be scheduled based on coach availability, so students may not be able to participate in an event if their schedule doesn't allow for it.
All events in Science Olympiad, are restricted based off of their competition times. A student cannot participate in two events from the same time block cluster, as they can only go to compete in one event. The time block clusters are as follows:

Kinard Science Olympiad usually competes in two competitions, the first being the regional competition at Fossil Ridge High School (March 7th, 2026), and the second being the state competition for qualifying teams at UCCS in Colorado Springs (April 4th, 2026). These competitions are fun, engaging, full day tournaments, where students will compete in their different events for a chance to win medals and help the team advance to the next level of competition.
Teams will be decided off of student commitment, skill, dedication, coach input, filler events, and Ms. Blumberg's overall decision. Coaches will sometimes give tests or quizzes to students to give Mrs. Blumberg input on final team selection.
Keep going to your event if you want. Even though you are not competing in it, there is still so much to learn. You will still be picked for other events, and this where your backup event selection comes into play.
The ELO is optional but highly recommended. However, you can still be engaged in the club, without being in it. To join, you can either fill out the Kinard ELO interest form that is handed out to students in May (for the upcoming year ELO), or you can ask your counselor to help make the switch.
Science Nights take place on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. Here build events are coached, as well as some other study events.
There should be little to no homework outside of event coaching sessions and Science Night, however if students feel inclined to study their event on their own time they are encouraged to do so.
A $125 fee is required to help pay for transportation, food, a Science Olympiad T-shirt, and other expenses that are necessary for winning! You can pay via SchoolPay or a check (made out to Kinard Middle School).
