All 6th and 7th grade classes at Boltz use Standards-Based Grading. Which means assessments make up a 99% of the students’ grades. 70% of the grade is from Summative (unit) Assessments, 29% is from Formative Assessments, and 1% is from Work Habits. Work habits include classwork, homework (we call this practice), and Weekly Reviews.
Note that homework is a small part of your actual grade, but the more practice you complete the better you will understand the material for the assessments.
Assessments
Assessment will be in the form of quizzes and unit assessments. Formative and Summative assessments may be re-taken once for full credit. It is your responsibility to request a re-take. Re-takes can be scheduled before or after school., lunch, or advisory In order to take a retake, you must demonstrate understanding of your mistakes as evidenced by test corrections. Re-takes should be completed within 2 week of when I return corrected assessments.
Practice Opportunities (homework)
Complete your practice opportunities on time and show all work. This practice is not busy work. It is essential to further solidify your understanding of the standards and participate in subsequent class activities. Practice work will be assigned on a regular basis Monday-Thursday. It should be an extension of what is learned in class and shouldn’t be unfamiliar material. We strongly encourage you to do this work cooperatively. The more you discuss your understanding, the more you will grow. This is a great habit to start now for your time in high school and beyond. The purpose is to practice and apply new learning from class within a few hours of learning and to apply it new, different ways.
Practice is the responsibility of the student. If practice is not complete students’ understanding of the material can be greatly affected. Our goal is to create a foundation for future years of math. Practice helps prepare students for success in years to come.
Practice is entered into the grade book each Friday. If you do not have a score of “4” on your weekly practice score that means there are assignments not completed and shown to me. You can see any missing assignments in the comment section on the right-hand side of your math assignment page. I will show you where to find specific assignments and grades once I have an assignment in the gradebook.
Weekly Reviews are assignments we do in class on Fridays. These should be completed predominately in class while collaborating with team mates. Weekly Reviews are essential in ensuring retention of previously learned concepts and a safety net to capture any concepts needing some extra attention.

Participate and Ask Questions in class
We work in our cooperative learning groups daily; students are provided conversations starters and other tools to help them communicate effectively with peers and the whole class. Sharing methods and ideas help students solidify their understanding and helps others see multiple ways to solve problems. We also embrace mistakes throughout our lessons, they are expected, respected, inspected and corrected as we explore new ideas.
Have a GROWTH Mind-Set
* Every mistake you make is PROGRESS.
* Don’t let FAILURE be an ending. Make it a BEGINNING.
* I can LEARN anything, I can KNOW anything, I can BE anything.
* Don’t give up until you are PROUD!
