Strands HUMSS Contemporary Arts

The Philippine Arts has four major traditions in which the current era has evolved from; the Precolonial, Spanish Colonial, American Colonial, and the Contemporary Period. Meanwhile, there are two periods which are especially distinguished, the Islamic Colonial, and the Japanese and Postwar period which you will be seeing in their blog of the Philippine Art Timeline.

With the colorful past of our country, came a number of contexts that we should be knowledgeable of and consider to better understand the Contemporary artworks from the different regions. In an era when principles and techniques are a guide to creativity but also deviated to be more expressive and creative ironically, context is vital.

In as much as art is about the expression of oneself which at times represent the country, recognition plays a vital role in encouraging a more creative community. As such Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA), and National Artist Award (NAA) have been established.

Furthermore, learning mediums and techniques is as significant as being knowledgeable of an artwork’s context. Artforms are the direct expression of an artist’s message with which to medium is the material while the ways to handle it.

Determining the meaning conveyed by the art by understanding how an artwork is made, put together and organized; and how it is produced, received (consumed) and experienced will help in the appreciation of the outputs from the local regions.

Subsequently, after exploring the Contemporary Art world, it is significant to understand where it is going to better appreciate the art forms of the current times.

With the rich Philippine art history, the significant people, events and support systems, and the technical knowledge and preparation to create a contemporary art; we now move further to the integration of the ‘local’ to the artforms. In the realization of what local is, integrating it to the contemporary is easier and more sensible.
