The Respondus browser works with Canvas New Quizzes to lock the testing environment. Students taking a Canvas New Quiz in Respondus cannot access other tabs, websites or applications until they submit the quiz.

Introduction to Respondus LockDown Browser for Students (K12)
Before scheduling a practice quiz
Provide time for students to download and install the LockDown Browser app on their personal device.
School-issued Chromebooks: Students do not need to install the LockDown Browser, the application has been installed remotely.
BYOD Mac and PC: Apps are specific to Brookline Schools. Students must download the installer from this URL:
https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=523162313
Note: Students will need the local admin credentials to install the LockDown Browser on a Mac or PC.
Schedule a practice quiz: Have students complete a practice Canvas New Quiz to ensure that the LockDown browser is installed and operating properly.
Tips from teachers piloting Respondus:
Students should close all tabs before starting the quiz. They'll lose them when the quiz starts.
Respondus won't work for students in the Restricted Mode. Teachers can easily print blank New Quizzes for students in the Restricted Mode.
Students need to know that they can't attempt to leave the Lockdown Browser until they have submitted the quiz. They will lose their progress.
Classic Quizzes cannot be used with the Respondus Browser in our Canvas installation. Students using a Mac or PC will not be able to access Classic Quizzes in the locked-down mode.
A Classic Quiz can be quickly and easily converted, or migrated, to a New Quiz.
Classic Quizzes can be identified by their icon. Classic Quizzes have only an outline of a rocket ship. New Quizzes have an icon with a black rocket ship. Published New Quizzes have an icon with a Green Rocket Ship.
Clicking on the three dots to the right of the Quiz will open a menu that includes the "Migrate" option. The migration will create a New Quiz with the green rocket ship icon.
Migrated quizzes should retain all questions and images from the Classic Quiz. However, it' recommended that you review the migrated quiz before assigning it in Respondus.
Are Notifications, such as messages, blocked during exams?
Yes, Respondus prevents access to other applications, including messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machines, and remote desktops. Students have to close open notifications.
Is the Respondus download free?
Yes, create an ungraded quiz and give students time to download beforehand. When they use the Brookline Respondus installer link, the correct download for their device will be available. Students who have school-issued devices have the application pushed out.
What about students who take an exam late?
These settings are controlled by Canvas quiz settings, which are managed by the teacher.
What about students who have Extra Time?
The Canvas Quiz settings apply. The default is no time limit. Teachers can set a time limit and allow specific students extra time through the Moderation settings. Teachers can also allow specific students multiple attempts.
Can students right-click to use tools such as Grammarly or Translate?
No, Right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts, and task switching are disabled.
If teachers would like students to use an external link in their test, is this possible, and can they use other links on the page?
Teachers can allow students to access a list of specified web domains during the quiz. Students cannot navigate to unspecified sites.
What types of other software might interfere with downloading/using LDB?
Screencasting, Spotify, Games, Python, Messages, Notifications, etc. Students need to quit out of these for Respondus to open. Best practice is to have students restart their devices before a quiz.
iPad Tips
Students using ipads can use the LDB app. They must first log in to Canvas via a browser app, NOT the Canvas app.
More details on how LDB works on a computer from Respondus:
LockDown Browser prevents a student from accessing other applications and personal files during an online exam, but it doesn’t access personal files or documents itself, nor does it transmit those files to a Respondus server. Once an exam has started, LockDown Browser will additionally restrict access to certain functions of the operating system, such as printing and screen capture. When the assessment is complete, the locking/blocking features are turned off. LockDown Browser doesn’t do anything on the computer when the application isn’t in use.
LockDown Browser has been distributed for 18+ years and is used to deliver hundreds of millions of online exams annually. Thousands of universities and school districts have institution-wide licenses for LockDown Browser. It is also licensed by over 70 assessment and learning systems for exam security, including companies like College Board, Prometric, Scantron, Pearson, McGraw Hill, etc. There has never been a situation where a version of LockDown Browser had a virus/malware attached to it. The security of LockDown Browser has been vetted by hundreds of institutions, including annual checks by third-party security companies. Countless security/privacy advocates have performed careful traces and analysis of what occurs with LockDown Browser.
Microsoft recognizes LockDown Browser as a high-volume application and includes it as part of their Microsoft Windows Compatibility Program. Under this program, Microsoft tests LockDown Browser against each new release of Windows. Similarly, LockDown Browser for Mac is reviewed and notarized by Apple prior to each release of the browser.
