This time capsule aims to inspire us to safeguard the places and experiences that young people cherish today so they may continue to enjoy them in the future. It is filled with objects selected by graduating seniors (class of 2025) that represent their hopes and fears about the future they will inherit. Will they withstand the next 25 years of climate disruption?
We hope this buried monument will prompt conversation and action. Monuments tend to lose immediacy with passing time. The stories contained here take on greater urgency as we move further into the future. As you read, you must confront the passage out of youth and wonder: are we keeping pace with safeguarding the stories of the people who wrote them?
For nearly two years prior to this timeline dedication, a Task Force authorized by School Committee comprised of Brookline community members, educators and students examined how we can place sustainability at the center of our school system. They built their work on top of years of advocacy. The Task Force presented its recommendations to School Committee on December 5, 2024. No action has been taken.
