This morning I was greeted at my hotel by the Uzawa family. I taught Narumi 3 years ago when she was in 7th grade. She has since moved back to Japan and is now in 10th grade. It was so great to catch up with Narumi and her mom!
We headed to Tokyo Skytree. We took the elevator up to the top! The elevator was so fast, it got to a top speed of 600 meters / minute. The observation deck has 360 degree views of Tokyo!
This glass floor was a bit scary!
While at the observation deck, Narumi and I each made a wish.
Tokyo Skytree is the tallest structure in Japan and 5th tallest in the world at 634 meters tall. We made our way up to the highest point you could go to which was slightly above 450m.
You could look up through the glass elevator.
For lunch, we got soba noodles (I got cold noodles) and then shrimp and vegetable tempura.
It was delicious!
We then walked around and did a little shopping. I loved the realistic food store!
Next, we went to Asakusa. Narumi and I took a tour in a jinrikisha - a man powered vehicle. It was so fun and a great way to learn about the area!
We also walked through the Kaminarimon, which is the first of two large entrance gates leading to Sensoji Temple. First built more than 1000 years ago, it is the symbol of Asakusa.
We also visited the Sensoji Temple, an ancient Buddist temple.
Omikuji are paper fortunes you can get at many shrines and temples in Japan. After offering a small amount of money, you shake a box until a stick with a number comes out, which matches a specific fortune. If the message is unlucky, it’s common to tie it to a designated area at the shrine to leave the bad luck behind. If it’s a good fortune, people usually keep it and take it home.
Ms. Uzawa also kindly got us some Ningyo yaki to try! These were sponge cake with red bean paste inside. Very tasty!
The Lawrence Reunion was held at Seseragiwo Kikinagara Restaurant in Tokyo.
Thank you so much to Ms. Kida and Ms. Kunugi for organizing it!
This was a fantastic way to end my trip! It was so great to be reunited with former students and families and to meet new families. We enjoyed great conversation and very delicious food! Thank you to all the families who traveled from near and far to come to the reunion! I am so grateful for this experience and the community we have together.
