Where in Bushwick are these rights being violated?
In Bushwick, many Human rights have been violated, But where? People's human rights have been violated in stores, restaurants, and even out in the streets.
In some stores certain people aren’t allowed or are treated differently because of their race or color. Even when trying to be employed. One time when a black woman named Ruby went to a store to get a job as a store clerk but when she was interviewed she wasn’t taken seriously unlike the other people applying. They also said she was the only black person they would hire. When she got the job she had to find her way around the store on her own and pay for the uniform. Also, some stores use codes or a code to warn staff employees about a black person being in the store. For example, Sephora uses the code Nick and the speaker would say “My friend Nick is heading to the back. Can someone help him out?”
Also, people are discriminated against at restaurants or fast food places a lot. For example, a popular fast-food chain called Dennys has been accused of being racist. Thousands of black customers claimed they were refused service, forced to wait longer than white customers, or overcharged at Denny’s restaurants worldwide. There are many other fast-food chains that have been accused of being racist by thousands of colored customers.
Sometimes people are even kicked from their own homes because of their color. This one time a colored woman named Lucy lived in an apartment building for 17 years but when a guy bought the property he immediately took Lucy to court to sue her. Lucy said “As soon as he got the property he took me to court and sued me for $80,000. Luckily I won the case but ever since if I have a problem like needing repair he wouldn’t do anything to help.”
A common way people get discriminated against is by the police. On the street during an emergency or even stopped because of their color for no reason. One time a man experienced this on the street. He was walking down the street when a couple of police officers ran up to him and started to yell at him to get on the ground. The man was confused about what was going on because he didn't do anything but he got on the ground anyway. One of the officers cuffed him on the floor and put his leg on his back to keep him from getting up. The officer told him that “Ablack man had robbed a store nearby and You match the description of a black man in white and gray clothing.”After a few minutes, The officer took his leg off of him and he was uncuffed “The other officers caught the actual thief. You're off to let go.”This shows people of different colors are discriminated against even if they aren’t included in the problem.
