Mr. Stark's

Amazing Class

School Closed for the Next 14 days.

October 19, 2020

As always, the health and safety of our students and staff, and everyone in the DOE family across the city, is our top priority.

As you know, our school building was closed today for an initial 24 hours because two or more members of our school community tested positive for COVID-19. Today we are writing to update you that the NYC Test + Trace Corps and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene have determined that at this time the building must remain closed for a full fourteen days

Here is what will happen next:

· The school building will remain closed on 11/1/2020, and all teaching and learning will continue remotely. We will reopen on 11/2/2020.

· Anyone with a positive COVID-19 test will not return to the school until they are no longer infectious.

· Close contacts of the person who tested positive have been notified and will continue their 14-day quarantine period. If additional close contacts are identified, they will also be instructed to quarantine for 14 days.

It’s up to all of us to help keep our school community safe and healthy. While we swiftly address this situation, please remember to follow these important “Core Four” actions to prevent COVID-19 transmission:

· Stay home if sick: Monitor your and your child’s health and stay home if you are sick or keep them home if they are sick, except for getting essential medical care (including COVID-19 testing) and other essential needs.

· Physical distancing: Stay at least 6 feet away from people who are not members of your household.

· Wear a face covering: Protect those around you. Wearing a face covering helps reduce the spread of COVID-19, especially if you are sick and don’t have symptoms. For more information about face coverings, visit nyc.gov/health/coronavirus and look for "FAQ About Face Coverings."

· Practice healthy hand hygiene: Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available; clean frequently touched surfaces regularly; avoid touching your face with unwashed hands; and cover your cough or sneeze with your arm, not your hands.

We will continue to closely follow directions from public health experts and proactively update you on any measures we are taking.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions. For additional information on COVID-19, visit schools.nyc.gov/coronavirus or call 311. Finally, to ensure we can rapidly reach you via text and email, please set up a New York City Schools Account (NYCSA) as soon as possible by visiting schools.nyc.gov/nycsa.

Thank you for your cooperation. Health and safety will always come first in New York City public schools, no matter what.

Sincerely,

Principal Jennifer Iovine

Important Letter

10/18/2020

Dear P.S. 108 - QUEENS - Q108 at 108-10 109 AVENUE Families:

The health and safety of our students and staff and everyone in the DOE family across the city is our top priority. We are committed to ensuring you have the information you need on COVID-19 as we continue to navigate this public health emergency together.

Today I am writing to inform you that two or more members of our school community have tested positive for COVID-19 within seven days of each other. We are quickly taking all appropriate action and following rigorous protocols developed by the NYC Test + Trace Corps, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC Health) and the New York City Department of Education (DOE).

Out of an abundance of caution, here is what will happen next to safeguard the health of our school community:

· Effective 10/19/2020, the school building will close for an initial 24 hours. All students will transition to fully remote learning for this period.

· During this time, the NYC Test + Trace Corps and NYC Health will complete their investigation and the school will undergo additional cleaning and disinfecting.

· No staff will be permitted into the building except for those conducting cleaning and disinfecting. All other staff will work remotely.

· Anyone with a positive COVID-19 test will not return to the school and will be safely separated until they are no longer infectious. Please note that in order to protect the privacy of the individuals who have tested positive, we cannot share additional details about the case.

· All students and teachers present in classes with the individuals who tested positive are considered “close contacts,” and have been notified of the need to quarantine for 14 days since their last contact with the person who tested positive.

· The NYC Test + Trace Corps and NYC Health will identify any other close contacts of the individuals who tested positive, who will also be notified of the need to quarantine for 14 days.

Based on the status of the investigation, I will communicate with you by 6 p.m. each night about the status of opening the next morning for everyone who is not a close contact.

Additionally, we will share physical and mental health and wellness resources for you and your child. COVID-19 can be stressful for you and your loved ones. It is natural to feel overwhelmed, sad, anxious and afraid. We want to ensure you can access helpful resources for coping and reducing stress.

While New Yorkers have done an outstanding job fighting the virus, leading to extremely low infection rates citywide, COVID-19 is still active in our city, state and our country. There will be cases of COVID-19 this school year; we know this and all of our protocols have been in service of fighting this virus. Our job is to swiftly and effectively handle any cases that appear and be transparent every step of the way. That is what we are doing today.

We know a lot more than we did in March about how to protect each other from the virus, and it’s critical that we continue to act to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our schools. All of us must remember to follow these important “Core Four” actions to prevent COVID-19 transmission:

· Stay home if sick: Monitor you and your child’s health and stay home if you are sick or keep them home if they are sick, except for getting essential medical care (including COVID-19 testing) and other essential needs.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

IMPORTANT - ONLINE LEARNING

I want to thank everyone for being patient during this trying time. I need everyone to follow the steps provided below. You need to create an account with the DOE following the directions exactly. Then I will send an invitation to invite everyone to my Google Classroom account. I will send a code that will take them there when I invite them. Please do this immediately. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Please Check Classtag

Please stay in contact with me through classtag. I will update you with any information that I have through this site.

Myon

The MYON reading website is a great resource for students to be reading and answering questions to keep up with their daily reading requirements and book reports. Each book has discussion questions and writing prompts and shows the amount of time spend reading. As you know, students should be reading a minimum of 40 minutes a day. This builds their comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking skills as well as aids them in becoming a better writer. To access this site, please go to: www.myon.com

Your user name is your student id code and your password is 1 then the first two letters of your first name. My password would be 1wa as an example.

To My Students

To My Dear Students,

It is a bittersweet moment that I write this to you. Although I am happy school has closed to help stop the spread of this virus, I will truly miss being with you each day and seeing you learn and grow. We teachers are going in Tuesday thru Thursday to learn how to navigate through this with our students. I will have more information in the next few days.

You already can work on the math review packet I gave you on Friday and your writing journal and grammar packet. This would be a great time to catch up on work that you are aware of that is due.

I can say this for sure.... There are a few MAJOR things I NEED you to remember...

***you should be READING EVERY DAY for 40 minutes*** This is necessary for you to grow as readers, writers and critical thinkers.

LOOK for the math in the daily life. Make fractions out of the food or toys or laundry you are doing. Use dice to roll numbers to multiply or divide. Challenge yourself to work on your facts. Math is everywhere.

Write a daily journal about your experiences. This is not a normal experience and it would be a great opportunity for you to journal your thoughts and experiences during this process. Use the skills you already know to add sensory details and figurative language.

I will continue to update you as best I can as to how they want us to move forward I will keep you informed.

Know that you have all worked really hard over the last few months. I have seen your reading levels, critical thinking skills and writing talents grow. I want to provide you with every opportunity to continue that growth here. Please do not let your hard work go to waste. Video games are fun but you need a balance. This will be a whole new experience to work through but I have no doubt you all can get through it successfully. Together we will be ok.

Stay safe. Stay healthy. And stay in the growth mindset of learning daily. ❤️

Be safe!

Mr. Stark

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

I am sure that by now everyone has heard about NYC schools being closed for an extended period of time. This is unprecedented. First, I want to make sure everyone takes care of themselves. Our health is most important. I am going into school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to meet with the other teachers and decide how we will continue educating your children. As of right now, I am not sure what this will look like. You know me and know how much I love each and every one of your children and I will do what I can to continue their education. When I have more details, I will sent another message. Please pass this message onto others.

I am also asking that you send me a message back on classtag so that I know who is checking their mail and who is not. This might be the only way that we are able to communicate. If you did not sign up on classtag, here is my email address. Let me know... starkw@ps108q.com

If there is anything that I can do to help, please let me know.

Be safe,

Mr. Stark
