The Innovation Lab is a hands-on, project based professional studies program for students, who wish to pursue a career in STEM related fields. Students will utilize equipment like 3D printers, plastic formers, laser cutting machines, and more, in our Tech Lab to develop and implement Passion Projects.
These projects can be from just a few weeks in length, to a whole school year. Students will work their way through classic engineering processes, where they Imagine, Plan, Create, Test, and Improve their projects. Projects can be digital in nature, like cell phone apps or webpages, or they can be physical in nature, with mechanical and electrical parts.
The sky's the limit, as students use critical thinking skills to develop a product that they can be passionate about!
Our students are using the following templates in our Innovation Lab and CADD courses to expose them of the real world cost of producing a raw product via laser cutting, 3D printing, or digital printing. The forms are used to to determine the costs based on the following criteria:
Materials
Quantity of material used / poster height
Machine / Printer utilized
Print / Production time
Finishing time
The forms will give the student an estimated cost of production of the model they are creating. Some cells have dropdown options which will change the calculations of the production cost.
Below are links to the three sample forms that our students use:
ELEMENTARY STENCILS
Last fall our Innovation Lab students were tasked to create name stencils for the Lincoln Early Childhood Center for one student. Originally our students made a prototype of a 3D printed version. After delivering the prototype to the school, all PK and 1st grade teachers wanted one for each student in their class. After several iterations of the stencils our class determined it would be cost and time effective to create them using laser cut acrylic. You can see some of the designs to the right and one student making use of his personalized name stencil.
We hope that this can be a project that we can continue to provide in the future!
