Irvine School Library is located in the center of the school. Nestled in the rural community of Irvine, Alberta, Canada. It has over 14 000 books, Chromebooks, iPads, games, and more!
Our library is a friendly space that promotes reading for enjoyment and literacy development. Students are welcome in the library at all times: to work independently, collaborate in small groups, or with their class. The library is proud to display student work and achievements. Often, speakers, presentations, or workshops are held in the library.
Irvine School Library works with the City of Medicine Hat, the Esplanade, and the Alberta Foundation of the Arts traveling exhibition program. Artwork from established Alberta artists is showcased in our library for 4 weeks a year.
'Read n' Quiz' is a new addition to the library, it is an electronic database of quizzes that has replaced the Scholastic reading counts program. It is an independent reading management program for Irvine students from grades 2 (after Christmas) to grade 7. It is a quick fun computer-generated program that assesses the student's understanding of what they've read. Immediate feedback and prize incentives turn students into motivated readers.
Our school Mascot, the IRVINE TIGER, sits proudly by the story pit. He keeps Mrs.Hamill company, and loves to hang out in the library because TIGERS love to read!
Librarian life according to Mrs.Hamill.
I am Irvine School's librarian, Mrs.Hamill. I've been working in schools for almost 20 years! I began my career in Saskatchewan as a Preschool teacher then took on many other jobs eventually ending up in the library. I knew quickly that this was the place for me. The library is my home away from home. I'm often here after hours catching up on extra work, or putting up new bulletin board displays.
Books, literacy, and reading have NOT always been my passion. I struggled as a reader when I was young. Thankfully, my 4th-grade teacher helped me find books I would love. With time, support and perseverance I became a confident reader. Her act of kindness is now embedded in my heart. I love to share my enthusiasm for reading with all of the students I've encountered, past and present.
I promise to work diligently so our school library cultures an environment that nurtures the love of reading. I hope all present and future students are able to find that "special" book that will spark their interests, and allow their imaginations to bring new worlds to life.
...Because when that happens we all can learn to love our shelves!.
