ABSTRACT
This paper presents a design process overview of a lung ventilator Human-Machine Interface (HMI), developed by a collective effort from professors and students of federal universities in Brazil during the first months of social isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The process steps are presented in the methodology section, which covers the requirements for an remote evaluation of the usability aspects of the HMI, using an online prototyping software. The interface layout details, such as colors, fonts and interactive elements of navigation are presented, and the evaluation results discussed, bringing light into the challenges and difficulties that arise when developing such user-centered projects with restrictions of the social isolation protocols. The results point towards a satisfactory reception of the visual interface by doctors and other health professionals, and also brings up suggestions for improvement, contributing to methodological and innovative practices of interface design in complex medical devices engineering.
