In class we use manipulative and focus on 1:1 correspondence. We also have started to use very simple calculators. You can even use the calculator on an smart device. As a society we get bogged down in memorizing our basic facts. Some of us have other skills and may never have immediate recall of 2 plus 3 . We may always have to count to be certain there are five fingers on our one hand. Does it matter? I mean think about it. We want functional skills. Functional skills look different for each of us. for example, your child is out shopping and has 3 boxes of mac and cheese each costing a dollar. He simply needs to be able to make 1:1 correspondence with his dollar bills and the boxes of mac and cheese. Or maybe he needs to be able to type in 1+1+1= and get 3. Then he needs to check what the correct change from his 10 dollar bill is and type in 10-3= and get 7...... and yes, money is another focus of our specialized instructions. Jump over the the money page for more activities.
