Welcome Message

8/1/2020

Hello Highlands Families!

Welcome to our school as we prepare for a new year of learning and growth! Now more than ever, the engagement of the Highlands “Community” is needed as we welcome new families, and support each other in our new and evolving learning environment. Although we will be apart (at least to start), our children should still feel that they are connected and part of Highlands. My name is David Swider and as this year’s PTA (Parent Teacher Association) president, I would like to invite you to participate in your Highland’s PTA. We have an awesome team in place this year and are here to support you!

Highland’s PTA is a non-profit organization run totally on the support of parent volunteers. An underlying principle for the PTA this year is the concept of a “Connected Community”. With the fluidity of this year’s learning environment, active communication whether joining the PTA meetings (online), checking the school website, social media, or simply connecting folks in your peer group, will be an important factor in this year’s success.

Monthly PTA meetings are generally held on the first Thursday of every month. The agenda usually includes: the principal’s report, teacher’s reports, special speaker’s, current PTA business and the opportunity for new business to be addressed. The meetings are both open and informative and online

How can you support Highland's PTA?

The PTA works with the principal, teachers and families to run and/or fund student programs. This year the PTA has taken proactive budgetary measures to streamline costs and suspend/delay programs where required. The financial impact many of our families are facing, coupled with current cuts in education funding will have an impact on how capable the PTA will be in supporting our students this year. As we identify gaps or needs, we will remain transparent and fundraise with appropriate consideration.

Simply put, one of the best ways of showing your personal support is to attend the online PTA meetings. We still have committees that might interest you. Taking on a single task or two, as determined with the event committee lead, is all it takes. That’s it! We are in the process of creating new committees to support distance learning, and other support programs. We welcome your ideas, suggestions, feedback. Please look for more information on upcoming activities and events.

How can your Highlands PTA support our families?

With the changes we are all facing, the PTA wants to be a trusted source for the Highlands connected community. Our focus is to ensure that the items that are brought before the PTA are communicated with our families. To ensure you have the most accurate, up to the moment information, please feel free to submit any questions, comments, concerns and feedback to President@highlandselementarypta.org for prompt response.

Finally, Highland’s has a rich history, with many generations of families attending Highland’s Elementary School over the years. Let’s stay connected and continue the tradition of providing the best learning environment for the kids and their future success. Your participation and support will make it happen!

Respectfully,

David L. Swider
