Description
Media Studies is an upper level course designed to give students the knowledge and skills needed to understand media communication in the twenty-first century and use it effectively and responsibly. After a brief history of mass communications the course dives into the tenets of media literacy, examining the various forms modern media takes (including Internet, movies, TV, music, and video games) and developing the skills needed to aesthetically and critically evaluate them. Students will analyze what message is being sent, to whom, by whom, and for what reason. They will also be introduced to key elements of design and cinematography skills for constructing effective messages of their own. The course centers around four key parts of life most impacted by media: news & politics, culture & society, economics & commercialism, and identity & psychology. We will look at the good, the bad, and the ugly including media bias, facts versus opinion, freedom of expression, privacy issues, and mature themes including sex, violence, crime, and sexuality. All content will be examined through a Christian worldview , applying the lens of Scripture to evaluate messages and discern how best to use ones gifts and talents.
