Home Reading
Parents, we will start our Grade One Home Reading Program during the week of October 10. Right at the start we would like to stress that this is NOT a competition to see who can read the most books. Rather, it is an opportunity for your child to be exposed to some new and different books than they may have at home. The goal of this program is to have your child read every night. 5 to 10 minutes to start, with the time increasing as their ability and confidence level raises.
The log page that is sent home is to be filled out with the date, number of minutes read and the name of the book. This will allow kids to continue reading a book for multiple nights if it is a longer book. There is also a coloring version, where your child can color a picture for every book they have read. At the end of 5 books/5 nights of reading your child will earn a sticker and after every 25 books/nights of reading your child will earn a prize.
25 books = bubblegum
50 books = prize
75 books =another prize
100 books = new book to take home and keep.
The goal of this program is for your child to read on their own. Of course you can help them sound out words and explain meaning. If your child is getting frustrated with the book they have, suggest to them that they get a different one the next day or you can keep it for another night. You can even read a line to them and they can read it back to you. Each day books will be exchanged at school. You can also have your child read books that you have at home and record those. You can read more than one book a night if you want. Please return your child’s home reading book and log every day.
On-line books
In addition to the books that your child can bring home from school and the
books that they read from home; there are online books that they can read. The website is called reading a to z and there is a great variety of books at all levels for your child to read. I have created a profile for your child to access books using this program. they can read them at their leisure and they can enter the title in their log book. If you are interested, please go to raz-kids.com and follow the instructions that were sent home on the parent letter. Please note, you can write these titles down in your child's home reading log.Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the school or e-mail me.
