Because students receive law school credit for the externship, the expectation is that the externship fieldwork will provide a rigorous educational experience for the student. Accordingly, the American Bar Association Standards governing law school curricula spell out detailed requirements for the structure and nature of externships.
ABA Standard 304 governs externship programs for which students receive school credit.
