Individual practice rooms are available for all students regardless of their major in Davis on the Lower Lobby level (LL). Each practice room is equipped with a music stand, chair, mirror, and Steinway piano. Baby grand Steinways are available exclusively for music majors and students enrolled in piano lessons.
The Class Piano Lab is especially dedicated for students enrolled in class piano to practice.
Davis Music Hall and Davis 008 are open for larger ensembles to rehearse as well as for students with larger instruments that would not fit in an individual practice room (i.e. percussion). These spaces must be reserved ahead of time through the Performing Arts Manager. The weekly schedules will be posted outside the entrances.
Practice rooms are shared, community spaces, and as such personal belongings including instruments should never be left in practice rooms. Lockers are located near practice rooms for your convenience. There you can store music binders, textbooks, manuscript paper, pencils, metronomes, and other musical belongings in between practice sessions.
Yes! Anyone is welcome to apply for financial aid for private lessons via our Financial Aid Form (see "Forms" under "Student Resources" in the navigation bar). Students receiving financial aid for their lessons must be enrolled in a major ensemble (orchestra, choir, jazz ensemble).
Majors typically receive a 50% lessons scholarship and are able to apply for additional funding. Music minors will be given the next order of preference followed by non-majors/non-minors, based upon available funds. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer financial aid for community members/faculty/staff at this time.
Financial aid for lessons in two areas is available at the discretion of the department.
A separate financial aid form titled "Financial Assistance for Accompanists" should be completed and turned in to the Performing Arts Manager by Friday of Week 3 at 5pm. You can find the form under "Student Resources."
There are several paid student positions that provide significant support to the music department. We love our student workers! Previous positions have included: TA for theory/musicianship classes, graphic designer/marketing manager, stage manager, piano maintenance assistant, ensemble assistants, and music librarian. You'll find a more in-depth description of student position in our Department Handbook listed in the "Student Resources" tab in the navigation bar. If you have a skill not already mentioned that you believe would be of support to our department, please let us know!
